Default Gas Smell in Air When Idling

This 94 metro 1.0L engine will fill the cabin with stinky gas air while idling at a stop light. It obviously needs a tuneup of somesort, but it is strange because I can eliminate the odor by turning off the ventilation fan while idling and then turning it back on when I start going. The fumes only come inside the car while idling. Is there some sort of exhaust leak that is shooting exhaust up into the fresh air intake? Does anyone know where the ventilation system takes in fresh air?

If i's "gas" fumes (not "exhaust") then you likely have a line off your Vacuum Canister which is near firewall and could be drawn in fresh air vents (other possibilities: (1)Vacuum Canister Check Valve is stuck open and a drawing liquid instead of just vapour;(2) if you have Carb ...mixture could be too rich (if it's this latter don't adjust anything until you've put in new Air Filter, Fuel Filter, and PVC Valve ...sensors will then have a better chance of correcting the air/fuel mix)

A clogged cat convertor can also have a gassy smell if it melted down. It will also hurt performance and mileage.
