Question New Member, Timing belt Question

I had my head rebuilt due to 2 burned exhaust valves (what a shock), and during the assembaly when I was turning the motor over by hand to check for clearance I noticed that the timing belt was walking forward on the pulleys. Have I done something wrong? Also my EGR is plugged solid, can it be cleaned or should it just be replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
94 4 door 1.0 5 speed
Thanks, Chad

I think I may have answered my own question. The auto parts guy said that the belt is supposed to ride up against on the crank pulley... we'll see...

Did you rebuild the head? When doing so, did the EGR port that runs through the head get cleaned? If the EGR is pretty gummed up, I would try to clean it first, but it may be toast.

The head was machined at a local shop. I didn't catch the EGR problem until the car was back together already. The ports in the manifold are pretty carboned up, and the valve was packed solid. I cleaned it, but I'm not sure if it is working or not. This car never smoked before, but now it has a decent amount of smoke under load. I suppose 180k is a bit mutch to just do the head?

Nah! I'd spend at least that much! -----

I would change the egr valve, you will never get it all out and it will not work properly. Now if a machine shop did the head then the port through the head is clean but you need to clean the manifold. I would remove it and remove the carb then clean it real good and reinstall it. a piece of wire and carb leaner with some time will take care of it. If you don't get the egr system right then you will burn some more exhaust valves.

on the timming you need to turn it to top dead center on the comperssiuon stroke and check the timming marks on the crank shaft and cam shaft if they don't line up then the timming is off and it needs to be repaired. You did install a new timming belt right???, if not you need to as well as the tesioner and water pump with 180 k on it.

The Timing belt is on right. I drove it to work last night and it ran great. I called a local parts house and they quoted $169 for an EGR??? That sound high to me. Can I clean the EGR ports without removing the manifold? I scraped and carb cleaned the EGR ports before I started it and I think (hope) that may be the source of my smoking. There are 2 nuts on the bottom row of the intake that I could only get off by removing the head.

when my egr was clogged I went to a local junk yard and found a good egr valve 5.00. Then to insure that the ports were clean on the manifold I blew air thorugh both ports the one going to the exhaust manifold and it was clear no back blast air, and the one going to the carb. all clear. if you do try to clean your egr vavle when done hook a hose to the vaccum line and suck on it to see if the valve actually works or not, if when vaccum is applied the valve between the two ports does not open it is futile.

Thumbs up

I cleaned it and it seems to work. There are 2 vacuum lines that hook up to it. The one that operates the diaphram seems to work but the other side of the EGR seems solid. Does anyone know what it should do? This is such a common problem, maybe we should have a thread on how to clean and test an EGR? Just a thought.
