So I just went out and tried it, and it is still doing it. Here's the weird thing about it though. When I first start the car, it will click. However, if I immediatly shut it off (only let it run for just a few seconds total), and then start it back up, there is no noise at all. So I don't think it is a cold/thick oil issue, because I think it would still do it when I start the car back up again since it had only been running for about 2-3 seconds on the first start up.

Any ideas, things to look for?
It's a cold/thick oil issue. It may very well go away in the summer months and reoccurr toward the end of fall. Try it wih just the 5W30 - no STP (oil thickener). My lifter noises didn't start until I put the straight 10W30 into it (no additives), and they are not persistent. It usually taps when its cold weather for a length of time - 2 or more days. When its warmer out I don't usually have the lifter tap. Seems that just that little bit of temperature and viscosity variance makes all the difference.
I haven't measured them myself, but I have been informed that the oil hole in the side of the 1.3L lifter is considerably smaller than the one in my Ford 5.0L V8's lifter. That would make sense.
I hope I'm not coming on as a condescending, "know-it-all" newbie. Just my 2¢.

I had another guy who is a mecahnic tell me that he has seen a similar problem caused by the oil filter. He said the anti drain back valve in the filter doesn't seal internally. He said it is a common problem with the Orange Fram filters. I have an AC Delco filter though. It wouldn't be anything to try another filter and see if that helps though.

Yes, possibility. Fram is probably one of the cheapest filters on the market. And I don't mean just price. I have started using Puralator or AC Delco, since a Fram failed at pressure blowing oil everywhere!
It took a bit of time, but Fram was good at reimbursing me (~$40.00) for the expense of the incident. I sent them the failed filter and they sent me a check. No questions asked.
I was grateful and no longer use their product.

My '95 Swift runs great, starts fine. But for the first few minutes of running after it has been setting like overnight, it makes a knocking/clicking sound, comes from under the valve cover. My guess is a lifter or something, and it goes away once the oil warms up and gets flowing, but i'm new to this 4cyl design so I could be wrong. Any suggestions or ideas?
I too have been experiencing the same clicking/knocking sound sometimes at warm up, I've only recently imported this G-Limited out of Japan and I've yet to change the oil so I'm assuming it's probably the oil.. Can any one on here tell me the recommended grade oil that's used for the Escudos?

Thanks, Jerry.
The easiest thing to tell you would be to look in the owners manual. If it is still available.
After a quick phone call to one of my local authorized Suzuki sales & service dealerships (Priority Suzuki), I learned that they only use 5W20. Even thinner than the 5W30 I'm using.
Interesting! But, that would certainly help prevent it from tapping at cold start-up.

I tried just touching the key this morning, then starting it. No clicking at all.
How's the weather? What was the ambient temperature? We may not be able to control the outside temperature, but we have a say in the quality of the filter we use and the viscosity of the oil.
