or just do like oh'bummer says
just pump up them tires.
keep in mind the stock clutch works in conjunction with the thermostat
at idle there is no air flow across the Rad . !, at moderate air ambient temps. ( but dont matter it will wake up soon)
the rad will over heat. (try it some time, all electric fan car do that. even after walking away keys in pocket they do "by design")
if the clutch is not there, the rad and engine overheats.
The clutch hold the collant at 180F steady (with a 180 and not a 195stat)
So its not about free wheeling at idle , it cycles , in and out.
What counts is what it does , car moving ,
it must free wheel most the time.
see this test here.
Gary's vid skips the other 3 tests. but this one proves its not seized.
note that the paper hardly bends, that is not any where near a 1 to 8HP
power loss as posted on 100s of forums. (keep in mind ,fan sellers, will lie to you to get that knee jerk sale....)
do the tests in the mr. good wrench book and see for your self.
so how do you keep the engine from overheating with no fan?
at a red stop sign. (remove the fan now, and see that.... it will and fast (just as it hits 180, it will go out of control)
Ive put them in many cars and trucks, with an aftermarker rad hose, electro thermo switch, that makes the fan work just like new cars.
his video is NOT complete! (for sure i dont know his purpose.. not really, nor do i care)
he is ONLY demonstrating, non over hot free running mode.! gee, the next test it to over heat it and see if it trips at 130F.. for sure....
so the MPG guys can stop sweating "PARASITIC HORROR LOSSES" that is my contribution to the myths and lies. on most sites. selling it .
sure there is loss. but the rad needs air at all stop lights. for sure. so......
see it, if it cant bend tiny paper its not using any power.
see? that, that is the topic here, for MPG. not cooling failures.
as for as full clutch diagnosis, my page handled it and so did mr. goodwrench
except he failed to do the engine off test......
doing all tests. works best, NO>?
the ASE class books go into vast more coverage, can link it.
it's a system, they work together.
and at red lights, too.
you do know that if the air flow drops to zero the rad stops working (mostly) and the thermostat opens fully, now at this moment, the cooling system is at max and any other increased need for cooling , causes an overheat.
they work together as one. if not it fails.
that's how it works, but the clutch is tricky, it has 3 and 4 modes going on inside:, it starts then locks, then unlocks,, slips some (red lights) engaging more at 130f, then lock but limit full rpm or blow up fan.
not simple at all but that is what it does....
now the EFAN, you idle, the motor overheats, you drop the cell phone and hit the switch, you hear pinging... and it abates,,, repeats, red ight after light, then dawns on you , the efan coolant stat switch. yah...
good, you never said HE SAYS, (who knows were skrewed came form, here, there ,video audio,)
sorry i didnt check the audio portion
nor do i care, the video is out of context, it told you that....
i was only showing the paper force visual
is that clear?
im not making my own video..... just to show the paper trick
gees, get this clear, the video is not a MPG video, is that clear.?
i only posted that video for 1 reason to show the slip and how weak it is. nothing more...
Yes, I understand that. But think of all the people watching that video, thinking what an easy test this is. They grab a piece of newspaper and go out and try it on their car. They are able to stop the fan. Then according to the video, they say, sh*t, this happened on the video and the guy said that his fan clutch was screwed. I guess mine is too!
I will not even contemplate all the wasted repairs that ensue! So, I just thought it wise to point it out that, in the video, the guy's conclusion is wrong.
'91 Tracker 8V, 1.6L, 5 sp, 4wd, 2dr, conv, CAMI, horribly rusty
'97 Suzuki Vitara 8v, parts car - worth its weight in gold.....
'61 NSU Quickly - 150mpg
not MY video
i added 3 more, all utube vides violate the safety rule #1
never touch the fan with your body , with engine running ,
ill let you do the video.... grin.
im not, i dont do utubes.
what id did, was show the 8 steps
the the 3 dangerous videos.
each shows one step done right. key off , must spin and paper trick.
tje pre start slip.
after start not locked cool slip
and full lock up.
all steps can be done with the optical hand tacho
or a news paper
the clutch has 5 modes.
and the last is a linear progression (mfg quote) to full lock and RPM limit.
testing it is non trivial, nor as simple as you stated.
nor do any youtubers get it right.
to get it right, you need to say water temp, air temp at clutch and mode.
