My 1996 Geo Tracker is running a set of Goodyear LT245/75R-16s mounted on 16" steel wheels from a 2000 Grand Vitara. The engine, tranny, axles, etc. are all basically stock and I don't plan to change them, except for other stock parts. This truck is a DD/PT wheeler (I have another TracKick I'm doing FT wheeling mods to).
The problem is my actual speed is 5 mph for every 4 mph registered on the speedometer (e.g. I'm actually doing 50 when the speedo says I'm doing 40). And I don't like the idea of having to do mental calulations every time I drive. So...
Is there a way to re-calibrate the speedometer for the tire/wheel combo I'm running? Also, if I have to swap in a different speedo gear, will it interchange between the manual and auto? Thanks for any ideas in advance.
What a friend of mine did on his VW Bus that had a weird speedo (I think the internals where in Ks with MPH face plate). After calculating, he used one of those Rolodex Index Ribbon thingies and label it where the pointer show the real speed.
the big one here just told me they cant do suzuki's
and cant repair one either.
to recal a speedo ,takes:
1: new gears in side, for odometer side ( oops)
2: and to change the mag coupling ring or needle spring on the dial MPH/KPH.
this is nothing trivial and no one makes these parts for SUzuki.
this is why they sell xfr case gear sets in many sizes.
the pro suz guy can find others ratio's not listed in EPC for exact model.
uses eye ball and parts bin ,looking. somne one here posted a suz dealer doing that.
best is just by a stand alone GPS and be done. (less money)
Note; this big shop here (speedoshop) charges 300.00 for speedo repair.
imagine the cost of recal. if possibe.
Since I'm rebuilding the 5sp gearbox anyway, it wouldn't be very hard for me to replace the internal gear. But $300 is WAAAAY more than I was planning on, that's for sure. I was thinking more in the range of $50-$75 for the set.
I wonder if the gears from another mfg will fit the manual??? Time to check the interchanges again.
no, i was quoting a large speedo shop, (calibrate or repair. both big $$)
and they refused both offers. so little time, so many shops in country with 303 million people and 3,539,242 sq miles ( have at it , ehehehehe)
the gears in the tranny are cheap
but they dont make gears (speedo in tranny drive gears 5sp) that correct 5.125 axles with larger tires. just look at my page. (there is only those for kicks)
unless you can find them off other brand of suzuki tranny, (that is hard, how would we do that , ?)
its only a rumor here that one Suz. parts counter guy found non sidekick gears.
only a rumor. but i do know for a fact other cars , you can do that trick. Chevy, ford ,dodge....
takes HANDS ON looking in THEIR stock room. see?
other gears from other co. boy where would you start. ( sure cant walk in and look,
say mister can i molest your parts with this here main shaft
they's s kick my booty for trying.....
