I just picked up a 95 sidekick and was just wondering if the RPM's should be at or around 3000 RPM's when going 55mph in fifth gear when in 2wd high? Also it does seem to like the higher RPM's than previous vehicle that I have owned. I don't think it is getting bad millage since it has about a nine gallon tank and gets about 230 miles to a tank.
95 sidekick 1.6, 16 valve, injected, cold air intake (my own design).

I don't know if they changed the size of the gas tanks in the 16v, but my 8v car is 42 liters (11 gallon gas tank). I would be going just a bit over 55 mph at 3000 rpms in 5th, so I think your ratio is normal. However find that for the very best gas mileage, I need to keep the rpms at between 2000-3000 rpms

I have a 95 Tracker 3-speed auto, no overdrive, 5.13 gears. It screams like a banshee on the highway. I have learned to just ignore it. I change oil very often, using synthetic, keep the coolant etc. clean, and change timing belt and idler bearing once a year. It's very seldom under 3K even in the city sometimes. On the highway I do try to stay under 4500, but go over it many times. I think at 75 it's turning about 4500 or so, I really can't look at the gauges at that speed, it takes some concentration to run that fast. They aren't the most stable vehicle to drive at speed. Point is let er flicker, if it blows, it's only a car, they can be fixed or replaced very easily. I am more concerned about my life, a crash at almost any speed in one of these things most likely means death.
