the wife and i were on a road trip for the weekend so we took the tracker way better on gas than the other 2 vehicles at the house anyway we make a few stops along the way everything is fine we stop at a store and go to leave i shift into reverse or i thought it was in reverse and it's not even in gear still in netural no biggie continue on and we stop again go to leave same thing roll to the stop sign and it won't shift into first so now it won't shift into any gear with the engine running i can shift into all gears with the engine off start it up and it lunges forward and dies it seems as the tho the clutch is not engaging i tightened the clutch cable in the parking lot and no luck i had to have it towed home cuz we were 68 miles from home so is it the clutch
Cable can still move even though something has let go inside, perhaps release bearing. Too bad you didn't know the procedure for driving without using a clutch, could have saved the tow job. Good luck with your clutch job. What kind of mileage do you have on there?

i just got around to messing with it today and tightened the nut on the cable alot more to where a little more than 3/4" is sticking out the end of the nut and tried to drive it and i can now shift into gear but it's still a little hard to shift gears i think the clutch cable is stretched oh it has roughly 60,000 miles it was towed behind a motorhome the odometer reads 129,000 but it is probably yhe original clutch cable
you need 1/2 inch free play in pedal. taking it all out will wreck the Throwout.
these cables dont stretch, but they do fray, snap or break at either end.
if it is not the cable,then it is the throw out collapsing and or those little fingers on the diapharm clutch are loosing there temper due to
Throw bearing getting hot and overheating those fingers. ( cause by no free play and or driver ridding clutch)
Some pressure plates just do this for what ever reasons.
if i am right,then the problem gets gradually worse.
one rare fail posted last year, some guy found broken welds in the clutch pedal mechancals above your foot
well after i drove it around the block yesterday i figured i would drive it to work today was fine this morning but then on the way home the closer i got to home the harder it was to shift into gear the when i get in front of my house i go to back into my spot and it won't go into reverse i am about to go and look underneath it again but i am thinking that the cable is loosing on it's own .. is there suppose to be a 2nd nut on the end to keep it from loosing????

I think you are saying the clutch will not dis-engage at times.
so it is bad linkage or a bad clutch. (but which?)
did you set the free play to spec? (need to know how ?, have procedure, can send)
1/2 inch at pedal is in the range of perfect.
test, if all play is removed and clutch will not dis-engage ( start in neutral, if it grinds then the clutch is dragging.)
the clutch linkage is simple but can fail as follows;
the pedal brackes can cracked. (rare) look.
the cable mount to fire wall is busted. (rare but real) look
the cable at the clutch side , is no longer secured in its bracket (damage?) look
or the free play is completly set wrong. set it.
look at the lever, on the right side of bell housing , how far does lever move?
if still not fixed, install a new cable they are cheap. ( be sad to have it be bad)
if still not fixed , bad clutch. must more expensive.
bad throw out (bearings in it turned to dust and collapsed. common)
bad throw out lever (rare)
bad pressure plate. (common) fingers i mentioned about have softened (anealed).
or cracked disc plate , or is completely mangled ( common)
if clutch is bad , replace it all. do not scrimp on clutches,
including pilot bearing,
when removed examine tranny input shaft ,check for end play , if any replace
front bearing on tranny it is under a lot of torture.
Also the input shaft is one of , last ones instock. ever. getem' while you still can.
