Hello to all! I have a '97 Sidekick JX with the 1.6L engine & auto transmission. I have recently been having trouble with the shifter solenoid that locks the shifter in park unless you have your foot on the brake. In warm weather it seems to work fine, but in cooler weather it won't engage. If I shut off the car say to get gas, or even put it in park running say in the drive thru or bank line, I have to wait for awhile before it will click for me to put it in drive. Very frustrating!!!!
I tore apart the console, located the solenoid and tested it over and over on a fairly warm day. Worked every time, until I started to put everything back together. Now it won't work at all. I pulled the plug on the lead to the solenoid, and tested the 2 pins that feed it, and 1 side was ground and I expected to see 12vdc on the other pin when I pressed the brake pedal. Nothing.
The Chilton book I have on the car doesn't have any mention of this device whatsoever. I have looked cover to cover. I am assuming that it is getting switched somehow thru the brake switch, since thats all I can find to trigger it. My brake switch is definitely working for the brake lights.
I had started out thinking that it was just a bad solenoid that when it got a little cold, it was getting gummed up and not pulling in. Now I'm not sure. Does anyone have a schematic that may show the path of this circuit, or any suggestions they could throw out there?
I would appreciate it greatly, since it is my wife's car, and she has been on my butt to get it fixed before winter and now I've made it worse than it was. HELP!!!
brake switch or wiring /connections.
I guess (?) the brake switch feeds 12v to the auto park solenoid.
so , put a light bulb on the down leg of this switch.
it if glows every time the brake is pushed it is good.
Id be all over that switch, it gets hit every brake push.
I hope its just your switch bad.
I wonder how many Audi5000 ladies, run over kids tryhng to get there car to move? dont ask that.....
There are a variety of aftermarket components, including emergency vehicle light systems, remote car starters, and alarms, which can intrude on the operation of these interlocks, even if installed as directed. ( or not...)
Thanks for the feedback jtgh. I will try what you suggested and post my findings and progress. I have no aftermarket do-dads, it's strictly stock, but it does have 200xxx mi on it. I would think there has been 1 or 2 brake pushes in it's time!
