Default Need help repairing shifter on a 1998 Chevy Tracker

Hey guys I was hoping for some help repairing my 1998 Chevy Tracker 5Speed 4WD.

I let my cousin borrow it and when I got it back the shifter is beyond sloppy and rotates in any direction, how do I repair this?

Thank you

You remove the shifter & replace the broken parts.

1 - Remove the #1 boot (covers the hole in the console)
2 - Remove the console
3 - Remove the #2 boot (covers the hole in the transmission tunnel),
4 - Release the #3 boot (covers the hole in the transmission) - be very careful not to damage the #3 boot, it's only sold with the shifter
5 - Release the shifter cap (depress and turn counter clockwise)
6 - Remove the shifter.

You should see several scraps of plastic - one is a ring (the shifter seat) and the other a small bush - replace them.

Reassemble in the reverse sequence.

I don't know if the 98 is the same as the 95 but there is a retaining collar that holds down the shifter. If you follow the directions Fordem said and get to #5 check that cap to see if it isn't seated.

Razor - your retaining collar is my shifter cap - we're describing the same part.

Uniami - you replace which ever of the two plastic pieces are broken - the shifter seat or the bush - both items are under $5, so I would just replace them both.

I know I was just describing the part's function. The OP said the shifter rotates so I'm willing to bet the collar has just come out of place.

Just so you're aware - the shifter extension shown in that drawing is not used on the SQ420.
