Thumbs up 92 Vitara SWB 5 spd, G16A, AUS. 1.6L 2dr Check engine light never turns on.

Ok so a new post. I mentioned this issue in the past. Thread link here
http://www.suzuki-forums.com/suzuki-...5spd-1-6l.html

my tag.

So I've been reading up again on this issue.. Come across some people saying check and make sure the check engine light comes on when the key is in the on position, then turns off once the car is started..

...Well mine doesn't come on at ALL?? What does it mean? How should I go about fixing this, and could this be part of the smoke problem?? Thanks for feedback, still a great site with lots of information!

First you will need to check to make sure that the bulb is actually in place and that it is working. If your car is running well, chances are that it is a bulb problem, or that it was removed, etc.
The CEL going on with key on is the ECU self check - does your car start and run properly?

Judging from your other thread, you seem to have a carburetted Vitara - so no ECU, and no check engine light - those are EFI only.

Ah, Fordem, you are much more vigilant than I - never looked at his previous thread (a good reason, then to put your specs into your signature, so everyone knows what you are driving, without hunting around).
Yes, no ECU with carb engine, assuming 'carby' from original thread is not throttle body injection (TBI). So no CEL.

Many years ago Bex, I was exploring my first brand new Suzuki (in fact my first new car) 42 miles on the odometer - the owner's manual showed where to insert the "diagnostic fuse", and no matter how I tried, I could not get the diagnostics to work - the car had the 16 pin J1962 OBD connector under the steering wheel, but no code reader would talk to it ...

Yup - it was carburetted, no ECU, no OBD -

Lol thanks a lot for that! It blows smoke when i rev, accelerate etc.. It's a pain in the backside, it runs fine, starts fine. The coolant is neon green and full. Any other reasons? Oh the smoke blows with the wind to so it's not vapor. Think I may need to check the spark plugs??

market code 24 , Australia.

bex look in your EPC, and see the FAE codes. it tells you what Type motor.
and there are many carb type motors.
this data is in the EPC in the end pubs sections. showing all tag numbers,

check it out.

ok Prez
it's a carb and like most carbs they , well , love to messup. (reason for banning them here)
smoke comes in white and black, my guess is that smoke, is black, (and smells just like unburnt fuel, am I correct)?
carb H3LL.
1: fuel pressure over spec! (wrong pump, wrong/bad reg, etc)
2: float valve leaks.
3: float doing this Titanic thing, its holed and sinking,.
4: CHOKE STUCK ON.
5: jets missing or unscrewed inside. (or some dweeb drilled them...out)
6: some one fiddled the float level, and sit it all wrong. (too high)
7: power valve, stuck open (some have this others dont)
8: most likely the whole carb is a mess, wana bet?*
9: i can list 50 more, but stop here, seen every one, at least once. (1965 to now) no brag, its like a yoke around neck.

this is not fuel injection
not even close.

bex. see EPC? for 92 era, market 24?
see M code. digit 7th
M24 the M means,,, type 2 motor.
that is TYPE 2 motor. (the type defines , carb or EFI) my EPC is down so cant say...

did some one remove the EFI and put a Carb on this car?

of all the codes , the TYPE code is the most hard to decode.
that is because they change them , in different years,,,,,

OP REMOVE THE air cleaner, and photo the manifold just below carb.
see if EFI parts are missing ..plugged, or abandoned.

ok, EPC up.
they sold type 2 and 3 with carbs and EFI. M= 2. ( i can not find a code that tells you if its a carb, or not.... very odd ....)
so look at the whole. ECU still there, behind right speaker, RHD, behind left front speaker LHD?
injection type intake manifold with ECT present or plugged.?
o2 sense hole or plugged on the center of exh manifold (8v)? carb has blank spot there.
head has fuel pump mounted , rear right side of HEAD>?
those are the best clues, .....
there is ONLY 1 speedo head, in 1992, SE416.
the speedo cluster has CEL lamp socket for both carb and efi but is not lamp'ed or wired , in carb car. yes, is confusing...

cheers. code 2/3 cars are very confusing...

The EPC indicates that this car comes from factory in either carburetor or fuel injected. This VIN lists the car as a Type 2 model (and strangely - in 'other filters' as a 1994.....) Sorry for delay, it is truly a PIA to get into my EPC, as it will only work on Windows, which I don't use.

The 62 in the model code indicates a "4 cycle, 4 cylinder, 1600cc engine, 2 valve and floor shift type 5 speed manual transmission" - which in this case means it's carburetted, for this market only the 4 valve (per cylinder) engines came with fuel injection.
