obd1 does in fact report VSS bad
but requires a little driving to get that code.
reset,drive 10mile fast over 50mph hot, then go home , a 10m drive. about.hot.
this post is for other VSS vehicle speed sensor , problems.

and is important.

someone dropped your speedo to the ground.

glad you found it....I'll add a comment to the field on that code.
its true for others too... 51,etc.
the fsm covers this is weakly, min info..., and in obd2,in spades, very good.

the newer cars are much easier to work on, with better diagnostics
obd1 is very weak on diagnostics,
the best FSM to have is the 1995 Geo tracker,
the info.is much better with this single volume.
and GEOs easier to find, covers both 8v and 16v,

happy trails

The EGR perhaps???
If you have never done so, you can remove the EGR from the car, soak the valve in carburetor cleaner so that all openings on the valve are clear and the diaphragm on the EGR snaps back strongly to its rearward position, when you push it forward. Do not soak the actual diaphragm, however. With the EGR off the car, you can ream out the intake and exhaust ports as well. You may want to make sure that you have a new gasket (or gasket material) before you remove it from the car, as if you have never done so, it's unlikely you will be able to reuse the gasket.

read my EGR page

i can be one of 3 things
1:exh path blocked or main leaking
2: bad vacuum to key egr parts
3: bad electrics, at EGR VSV (wrong ECU counts)

there are exceptions by year. but just what is a frankenSammi.
what ECU,what EGR parts, Do the match ECU,, id never guess.
Quote:
I have a 88 Samurai with a 94 Sidekick 1.6L 16V transplant.

so i have only one question, what ECU, pn. last 58bxx or?
just the suffix number varies.
and the words, US MT or US AT.

94 is a transition year, for EGR. so.....
before the transition there was an egR map
then they changed (calif style) to EGR thermoprobe.

if mix up this parts, it will never pass #51

lets pretend the parts are right!
did you do the>?
stall test
bark test
live test

so here. all tests for 16v (92-95)
gen 2 egr
Gen1 tests

a missing EGR thermo probe, if you ECU needs one.
will show room temp ,or cold all the time.
if the exh really flows, the EGR probe reads less than 10,000 ohms

if your ECU use the map . readings.its more complex.

here is way 94 16v dont help me (see my DIY list off my page)"complex"

Quote:
EGR calif. Thermo probe EGR's ,a matrix 92-95 ( USA) Suzuki Parts list derived, GM is different phase in.
SUZUKI only. names: EGRT, thermoprobe :aka a simple thermistor
All 95's 8v or 16v Cal or Fed. a thermoprobe
All 16v 2 doors have this thermoprobe EGRT.
All 16v 4 doors 94/95 Calif or Fed. Some early FED 94s may not. VIN serial selective. a thermoprobe
All 16v 4 doors 92/93 Calif. a thermoprobe ,that means FED is MAP
All 16v not above are Fed EGR , sans(NO) thermoprobe. (EGRT)
All 8v 92 thru 94 Cal cars. a thermoprobe
all other years and types use FED EGR MAP , sans thermo probe
see the red words,, and why 94 means zero to me.?
so need ECU exact P/n to matchlist and parts.

my info is based on all ufiche, all parts lists. EPC and direct experience!!
if you answer the simple questions, we can match you up, and it will work.

i just had a great idea , thanks to you and others.
i helped a guy,who gave up in calif. 51s.
in 1email. wrong ECU. ! he spent a fortune, and not one shop could discover the is simple truth

my IDEA< ill ad the above to my ECU pn, pages. (epc pages)
so you can correlate ecu to egr.
so easy. , its in my journal....to do...

no simple answers,if you want simple try walmart

great manual and if fact the best pre 96 manual in the wilD

a real USA ECU.
and 3sp and 2doors,
94 Sidekick 1.6L 16V transplant

i go to my ecu page.and ....
http://www.fixkick.com/ECU/EPC-ECU96...95/89-95NA.pdf
see
1995 ECU,not 94 at all (2doors, 16v, ) so much for 94, its not.
but uses the thermoprobe for sure.

the ecu is tuned by car weight , so 4 doors are different ecu.
70ED0 is calif 4door version. 70ECO is 4doors, FED.

is this franken an A/T?

why not spec out car, with a full sig.
?

the 70prefix, yells 1995. 58B was before.

the 3AT ecu needs to have the park pin working, with the right logic.
the ecu watches PARK.
just like it watches clutch in a M/T

in a real car,not a frankenkick this pin may be ok.

keep in mind the egr works of clues from
TPS idle switch (must be idle)
TPS throttle angle (not idle not wot)
VSS speed (off zero mph) 1996+ only,i think
park pin
engine load.
RPM

if any inputs are wrong, the EGR can mess up.

on oBD2, the ecu is smarter and dont even try to do tests if other inputs are bad.

here is franken test
stall test passes
bark test passes
live test. (can be done in drive way ,wheels on ground.)
if all above is ok?

then make sure the EGRT wires, go to over 10,000 ohms , as you hold open the EGR main at idle. (it will try to stall so use less finger push)
if the EGRT thermoprobe goes from say. 50 to 200k ohms(cold) then as you open
main,,it will drop to less than 10,000 ohms <10k
if it does that, this ECU will stop 51.

see table here

I just ran the stall test. Diaphram moves but engine doesn't change. Diaphram holds vacuum at least 2 minutes.

Plugged exhaust passage. Will take it off and clean.

Also ran the "live" test while I was there. Diaphram moves with increased throttle. Snaps back when I let off the throttle.

So that I think is promising!

Full disclosure on vehicle:

88.5 samurai, 33" tires, 6.5:1 t/case, 4.625 kick/sammy hybrid rear, 1.6 16V year I thought was 94 but xxx info says 95 ecu. Weight 3100lbs minus driver

Manual samurai 5sp (older one with lower rpm 5th)

Exhaust... Doug Thorley header with 2" exhaust. Aftermarket cat and dynaflow muffler.

Engine does idle down now after it gets hot (didn't before VSS fix)

Always had trouble passing colorado emmissions for hi NOx (EGR explains that)
I did check EGR for movement (live test) but never thought of the stall test.

Header does have passage for EGR connecton though head and is california emmissions legal...

Engine runs great now, and used to stink on the trail and especially headed down a long grade ("Heavy" exhaust smell, not rotten eggs or gas. Kinda like new cars at 1st startup smell) but now doesn't stink after VSS fix.

I would like to get this EGR nailed so I can fly thru emmissions. Here 5 is the limit on NOx (forget the units) and it always blew 5.05 (barely failing) so I would air up the tires to 40 psi (lower resistance) and it always passed the 2nd try (barely)

Thanks again all! Especially XXX.

I'll report back on passage cleaning.

Andy

Pulled the EGR valve. Pretty clean and moves great. Did the "bark" test. Now I know why its called bark lol. So I have exhaust to EGR.

Time to pull the intake and clean the hardest ports I think.
