My understanding was that the lower 5th gear came in the 4 door models.

If you have a headwind and have to run 4th gear, The engine speed will be greater than 5th (obviously), but it will be nearly the same as 5th was when going through a 5.12:1 final drive ratio.

So essentially you're switching to a 4 speed manual with a super low overdrive, if you will. Running 4th on hills or if you happen to get a terrible won't cause harm.

Nope. It depends on the engine, not the body.

well guess my '93 5spd trans. must be .86 in 5th gear. I've been looking at complete junkyard axle assemblies the 4.3 is 125-150 each for front and rear and the 4.6 ones are quite a bit more-like 200 and up. Haven't called so I don't know if you get the front hubs with them or not. There are not as many of the 4.3's available so got to do more research before I decide. Have concern about having to find axles and hubs down the road. Definitely would like to get 4.3's. going to have to spend a morning on the phone with those junkyard dogs before I decide

The hubs are the same on all ratio axle assemblys. It is the inner axle splines (the ones that fit into the diff) that changed in 96.

Block the front tires, put the tranny in neutral, put the tcase in 2wd, jack 1 rear tire off the ground (both tires, if it has a spool or is welded in the rear), spin the rear tire exactly 2 revolutions while counting the revolutions of the rear driveshaft.
A little over 4 1/4 revs=4.30s.
A little over 4 1/2 revs=4.62s.
A little over 4 3/4 revs=4.88s.
A little over 5 revs=5.12s.
A little over 5 1/4 revs=5.38s.
A little over 5 1/2 revs=5.62s
A little over 5 3/4 revs=5.83s
