Default Cambelt timing marks

Hi,

I'm replacing a broken a cambelt on a Vitara JLX 1994, 16 valve. We aligned the "E" on the camshaft pulley with the "v"of the slot cut of the tappet cover, firing the front cylinder no.1 in the front and rocked cylinder no.4 at the back, gearbox side. It won't start.

Is no.1 on this engine meant to be in front (near the fan) or at the back (near the gearbox). If so, which marks on the camshaft gear must I use on the "v" slot on the tappet cover?

Does anyone have a diagram of this?

Engine/valve timing is set with #4 (rear) at TDC (c) compression...

Ignition is set with #1 TDC(c) (front cylinder)....

Caution, the 16V engine is an interference unit, do not use starter to rotate until you are sure you are mechanically timed correctly.... damaged valves will be the result....

.....Philip

The cam uses the E marks, not 'I' marks which may be on your pulley. Crank key is at 12:00, cam key is at 6:00, timed to cylinder #4 compression stroke. Ignition is to cylinder #1. Car fires 1,3,4,2. The distributor rotates anti clockwise. Using the base clamp as 12:00, wire for cylinder#1 should be set at the 1:00 position.

my acid test in on my sneak a peek page.
it will not fail you.
How to Sneak a peek?

nor the tbelt page for 16v.
shows every pulley ever made,
and all false marks and keys.

NO "I" key
NO "I " marks.

the acid acid test, is normal compression

#1 has nothing at all to do with setting the cam.
the Tbelt came with instructions, mine states, #4 clearly.
if the marks are aligned, #4 is firing.. you nor anyone can change that.
its just where it is ,when aligned.
