Default OBDII scaner for my 96 sidekick JX sport 1.8

96 sidekick JX sport 1.8 4x4 - manual transmission

There is a "service engine soon" light. And MPG sucks at 16mpg. Also I feel weak power when start the car after a red light or stop sign. Most normal driving 1.6L car ahead mine could even start after a red light and go further 50 feet ahead me. My cold start idle is 2200rpm, and it stays 2000+ rpm for a minute. Then idle is 900-1000rpm. When I start car at a up-hill after a red light, I partially release clutch pedal, the idle drops quick and lower than 500rpm (some time 400rpm). At this time, I have to quickly add gas to get rpm back to 800rpm to move the car.

This car is US version with OBDII port.

I think scan the codes first. I guess it might be O2 sensor.

I saw ScanTool ElmScan 5 is arround $23 with official software OBDwiz(basic version without extra module).

introduction on scantool website
覧覧覧覧覧
free feature-packed OBDwiz:
Turn off check engine light, and erase stored diagnostic information
Read and erase stored, pending, and permanent trouble codes (both generic and manufacturer-specific)
Access freeze frame information
Display, graph, and log 90+ real-time parameters
------------------------------------

I know some repair garage provide free "check engine light" code check, but I won't easily trust them. I could compare their results with my code-reading.
It is enough for me to read codes of my car?
Any other better choice around $30?

Do not waste your money on a CODE checker.

Make sure you get a LIVE DATA SCANNER, whether stand alone or computer based.... Philip

Yes, seems to be, as per ad below:
ScanTool 423001 ElmScan 5 Compact OBD-II Scan Tool and OBDwiz Diagnostic Software : Amazon.com : Automotive ScanTool 423001 ElmScan 5 Compact OBD-II Scan Tool and OBDwiz Diagnostic Software : Amazon.com : Automotive
I am not tremendously familiar with scanners (Aqua is), but it is possible that you need to confirm that this scanner applies to Suzuki Sport, etc. I believe that there are different programs for different cars, as some codes are not generic. You need to make sure its compatible.

The Elmscan 5, is based on the ELM327 chip which is mostly OBDII compliant.(depends on where the chip is cooked)...

The pictured unit is USB so you will be tethered via cable to the truck. The software runs best on Win XP.... You might consider a Bluetooth unit which will allow the puter to be used further than the cable restriction....

I use a BT OBDII, in combination to Torque Pro on my Android smartphone.... I also use an Autel MS509 and MD802 (hand held, stand alone)....Philip

I have a Macbook with SSD(it can run windows xp). USB cable should not be a problem.

get a palmer, its far better. bang for buck
and runs ,on many devices... even android .
no need for xp at all.... IMO

Home - Palmer Performance Engineering, Inc.

i use scanXL. on an old lap top.

ok let work the problem
no power
but the O2 is not used at 3/4 full trottle WOT mode cancel that.
and is now under MAF control.
low fuel pressure?

but the 2000+ idle rpm proves a massive air leak from the TB back to the valves.
the MAF on this car is in side the TB (remove it and clean it with CRC maf cleaner)
then find the air leak.
if you can turn on lots of loads hot, and the ISC controls the idle at near 800
then its work, just turn on everything, but A/C then turn on A/c and see idle go to 1000. that rise is ISC caused. (ecu commands)

I partially release clutch pedal, the idle drops quick and lower than 500rpm (some time 400rpm

this sounds alike a Weak maf or a horrible air leak

the scan too will show you that.
you will see it go lean
and the LTFT will be way +20% adding insane full to correct lean.
perfect LTFT is -3% hot, (maf is naturally 3% rich, perfectly)
watch closed, look
must hold that ,at idle (if not say so)
and hold that , at cruise. then drop out only for WOT.

what is the hot wot performance, this speaks VOLUMES.????

hear are my maf plots.
if the maf reads real low the ecu may not be able to correct it, and for sure fail WOT.
off my maf page (ignore slow and bad 160 thermostat. ) the maf works just like this.
http://kickfix.ac-vw.com/my96-16v/TP...S-ECT-FUEL.JPG

i can get , 3 volts with a vacuum cleaner on a 1.6L maf. yours can do more.
1.6L spec is 4-7g/s idle and 100 g./s a at the 1 > shift point , WOT ,up hill. your can do more. with 200 cc more engine.
here is my all time max on any maf, i really had to work at it to nail this. 105 grams per second...... Up a hill. and flogging the hell out of it. 3rd gear moving fast. 65mph?.

How to-test the induction Air meter.
Thanks, your diagnose is awesome. I checked the website out, but I didn't understand what to buy. Also ScanXL Standard Software License($99) is too expensive to me. I haven't Android smart phone. I only have Nokia 5530XM(Symbian S60Version5 smart phone), iPod Touch 4(no Bluetooth, only WiFi) , a Macbook and a DELL old laptop(runing Win XP). My budget is below $30, as long as it could diagnose the symptom of my car.
