Evap/fuel tank pressure control system malfunction. Easiest thing to check is to make sure you have the proper gas cap on the car. Some info and links for you here for the evap canister system, in case the gas cap is not the culprit. By the way, the check engine light is not an idiot light. When the CEL goes on, you should attend to it, as the computer is trying to communicate with you.

96/97 is a cusp year.
EVAP 1 to EVAP 2
the under hood sticker shows which it is. (open hood , look uP

that vacuum MAP seem, and the EVAP words....there...
EVAP 2 is tricky, (yes, put on a new gas cap,) or was it loose like 9 out of 10 fails. for EVAP.
vasts number of tests on EVAP 2

tighten cap,, new cap drive for a week and report

you never said the year.
and evolved 4 times. 96-98
and fed is not like Calif.
so the under hood sticker (open hood, look up) see vacuum map
see words calif, anywhere on that white sticker, with word compliance ?

the be the Calif versin
in 98 changes again.
so not posting year, kills all good responses

the rear of car at tank
the new VSV valve was in 96 calif models, and 97 and in the Fed 98 model , tricky , huh?

new vsv. new ecu, and new tests procedures in the books.
