The clutch on the Vitara is a mechanical clutch that does not rely on ignition.. It might be an idea to try to locate exactly where the knocking noise is coming from, like have someone engage/disengage the pedal while someone else is under the car (with mechanic's stethoscope, rubber hose, or possibly just your ear), and listen (and also look at the clutch cable action). Have you ever changed the clutch cable? They have a life of about 100,000 miles, and can put great pressure on the firewall, etc., if they start to bind. Some clutch info here:

Does your car go into gear properly? Tranny slipping at all, etc.?

while runnng ,
parked
in neutral
you press the clutch pedal, just taking up all slack in the cable do you hear
noise, just as you that.
you are not depressing pedal to floor.

you do know, that any clutch made, can break in infinite ways (but in the T/T plate, plate to housing and pivets, diaphragm spring breakage or rivet failures, or a progression of all) then there are cascade fails.
right. ?
even the simple throw out can collapse and warp and make any amount of noise it wants. sure. as you say, google failure mechanisms manual clutch.
t
even the bolts can be loose. on the pressure plate itself or the lever holding the PP casting (pivot) levers (to outer housing) can fall off and bang, knock.

if you want ill send you one or more for play. (we have a dead clutch room in the shop with hundreds of bad clutches)

or the pilot shaft tip failure and/ or bearing allowing the pilot to wobble clutch disengaged and yes knock.
the front tranny bearing can knock in neutral\
but no,
knock on wood

the knock is coming from the transmission, and i'm pretty sure the clutch cable is the original, i was told i'd have to pull out the gearbox?

sure sounds like clutch and box.
with clutch pedal depressed, if sound stops it's the clutch and not transmission.
(rare case of jammed clutch and box expected)

my test for burned up throw out is easy , light foot pressure.
sorry for loss.

95 5sp, knocker.
i cant hear it, but if the noise can be heard inside tranny or clutch bell housing
the problem is inside.
i think your mech, must have heard it, right?, and said it was in the tranny/clutch.
?
a stethoscope will help here.
the noise happens parked. right?
and happen in neutral with foot on the clutch or off the clutch pedal, right?
and i presume it makes noise moving down the road.?
and your sure this not the engine.?

only careful listening with a stethoscope to engine then bell then tranny can tell you what is actually making that noise. (im in the cloud and cant hear it)
