Default condensor fan question

should the condensor fan turn on as soon as you hit the a/c button? or should the compressor run for a while. (my boss said it should build head pressure before turning on.) 1996 geo tracker 1.6 16v 4door 2x4.

The a/c fan is not run by the compressor, but by the a/c amp that sits on top of the evaporator case. It turns the fan on based on information it is getting from sensors and the ECU.

THE AC amp sets those rules
at least these rules, the brains very by year, for 10 years.

if it runs at all , its ok.

if you question the logic, you'd better dig in to the amp
real deep.

it monitors many inputs and for example
may run the condenser if motor is over heated
and may cut condenser fan if motor is OVER loaded. ( ECU rules set)
see the complex nature?

some amps , operated the FAN , if ambient temperature is over certain level , at key on, AC on.
my 04 does that.
as you can see testing the brains in the AMP from 89-99 or newer is complex subject. no man has done that yet, you volunteer.?

Default Thanks

ThaNks for the input. My condensor fan will run even in the middle of winter here in illinois. I turn the a/c on to remove moisture inside the cabin. And i can hear the condensor fan running. I also have an electric engine fan hooked to run with condensor signal and as engine temp. They both come on when you push the button on dash. My service manager at a semi shop says it should go off of a/c head pressure. But it doesn't seem to. It works just thought i could get some colder air out of this lil guy. Thanks for all your help. That amp thing must be smarter than we are. Thanks again PS ELECTRIC FAN DOES ADD ABOUT 4MPG AND 9MPH TO TOP SPEED.

well for one thing you never said what country your car is.

usa, canada?

i have the full fsm.
and linked it

tell you service manager (at GM) where in the schematic below
that can happen, show me.? ( i know these guy mix cars in their heads and he dont fix cars, he points fingers? right?

there is no HEAD pressure any thing. sorry !( there is a TOO-low and TOO high freon pressure ) but this is
to save the compressor for destruction. and is closed full time all the time.
so AMP pin 6 controls the fan (see it?)
if the over heat switch goes bad(opens or falls off) the fan slams on. to cool engine.
if the evap ices up the fan is cut to help de-ice. RTM.
if the motor ecu signals , over load (passing or pulling grades)
the ecu tells amp to cut fan and A/C.

if the ecu sees cranking it cuts all A/c
some AMPS have a thermometer in inside for ambient temps (mine does !)
of the ambient temps go to too low , the AC is defeated
the car will run to -40f but never the AC
on mine, the ambient when over (undocumented degree's (guess at 90-100 ) the front fan comes on with A/C (mine does)
that is OTTOH.

how you like my horsed up drawing.? helpful?
should get rid of lots of theories of inputs that dont exist.

i do not claim to know all logic in the AMP (a black box)
but it is more that it seems, i had to read about 10 FSM over 10year span to see the total picture.
too bad all this info ,is not in each FSM, a table of logic.

i can say this for sure,
if the fan is on, and the fan relay is not blown (not fused contacts. but is working)
if you check , each input to the AMP you will discover;
1:the reason for old compressor action
2;Or the internal temperature sensor is activated. (hidden input to said logic)

Did you have some kind of temperature issue that made you put in the electric fan? The factory fan runs all the time.
