Hi all, First post here. Sorry if it gets long. Just bought my SideKick for $100.00. I knew it had a busted timing chain and assumed some bent valves. (leakdown test confirmed) It is in very nice shape otherwise and has 120,000 miles. I am going to remove the head and was just looking for tips or tricks or cautions for removal/installation. I did a search but came up empty. I intend to get a FSM but at this point time is limited. I need to get this on the road.
Is there anywhere to find PDF's from the FSM for this procedure? Torque specs? etc? I am looking forward to being a contributing member But as of now I'm just a needy newbie looking to get spoonfed.
Thanks, Paul
It appears someone here needs their head (cranium) removed and it`s not in a Sidekick! Go away Spammer!!!
Paul,
Search out the member `Kick-Fix` and look to his pages and links for help. Also keep posting here as you go. I sure hope my 16 valve makes it until I can afford the repair, the horror stories are beginning to scare me!
Thanks Nor'Easter. I found Kick-Fix's (is he Da MAN?) zip file on chain replacement after I posted. It answers a lot of questions but not all.
Will update as project moves forward.
Paul
what do you need? , i have a pdf for the chain , swaps.
and torques. in there.
and sure there will be questions.
the books are hard to find on 1.8L SPORTS.
so tell use what your repair path is and i can send supporting docs to you.
love to see a $100 sport live again.
rock auto sells a kit ,BTW.
actually most need spoon feeding on any 1.8L ,
but you can get all that data at the public library.

Lets avoid shot gunning or guessing or working with out tools. I will help you the best I can! I can't see or hear/feel your motor, so consider my answers, in that light. You can rent most tools.
There are 2 diagnostic paths, one with tools and one without! Which way?
I've finally got some time to work on this. Will be taking the head off tonight.
Can anyone supply me with the sequence for head bolt removal/install.
I will be taking the Head to a pro to have it checked and replace whatever needs replacing. In the near future I will need torque specs for the head bolts and the cam cap bearings. I know needy, needy, needy. But without
others ignorance what would y'all post about?
Thanks in advance. I hope to get a picture posted soon.
yes, the 1.8L
the FSM is hard to get cheap and has many suppliments to flush it all out. hard to do.
but why worry that, there are 3 other sources.
Public Lib (have them in MN?) on line + esources+autorepair+ chiltions.
see attached experpt from there.
also walkin and see and print full Mitchells on same.
also go to ALLdata dot come , join and same deal.
you dont need an fsm for 1.8L all is there, at those 3 sources.
there, you are enabled ! LOL.
as for sequence. there is a loosing seq. and a tightening seq.
below is 1.6L
