this is 8v TBI motor and the ECU creates injection 100% unlike 16v.
8v has dual drivers.
so if you kill ECU, Coil, and dizzy , all is dead. (can run on , unless.....)
but if it is dieseling , the Injector may be dripping the infamous 0_rings around it are
cracked and it is lawn sprinkler with no shut off valve.
observation of live injector is the poof. (key-on 10 times person 1, you look and make sure it dont water fall only) ( no starting)
lots of key on's builds lots of pressure. this will make bad o-rings leak like crazy.
so bad that shutting off motor will , keep fuel going and it can stay going on red hot carbon in the combution changer,(more like a glow plug, and not true diesel)
its just an old experession from the carb days.
called after run, or run ON, and lots of other things too.
usually no more than 5 seconds max. (we use to dump the clutch to damp it out)
VW's loved to do this. (until the year of carb shut off solenoids)
hope that helps.

Lets avoid shot gunning or guessing or working with out tools. I will help you the best I can! I can't see or hear/feel your motor, so consider my answers, in that light. You can rent most tools.
There are 2 diagnostic paths, one with tools and one without! Which way?
3-dieseling, no spark ,but forgot and left power to the ECU. oops , dieseling
.
Quote:
6.engine stops running ( ok , engine stops , no spark no fuel)
engine continues to try to turn over though. (what ever does this mean?)
When I said "turning over" I mean cranking. I f i disconnect ground then teh engine stops. otherwise continues to crank after key is off. No power to ECU through ignition. If I turn ignition on and engage starter again engine will run. Turn ignition offengine will continue to crank.
your starter solidnoid is cross wired.
if the starter is spinning (actual motor powered) then the solenoid is energized
(or the starter pinion is jammed)
a voltmeter to the Solenoid coil lead "ST" will confirm this.
12v , then its crosswired.
0v, bad pinion mech.
easy huh?

big stud outboard , 12v all time. (the battery + it is)
big stud inboard, 12v only with start button presses.
KEY line ST, spade, 12v only when start button pressed.
this data , will discluse the truth.

Your vast knowledge proves priceless once again. The starter pinion was jammed.

Everything was working great. Went out on the trails yesterday no problems. Today I turn it to the on position and starts up before i even push the start button. Power is running right through the switch!!! Ok , I think the switch is bad, so i try another. Same thing. Is there a relay that could be bad that is sending to much voltage through the line that the n.o. mom. switch wouldn't be able to stop???? The switch Im using is specifically designed for push button start usage should be able to interrupt the current I would think.
Put a volt meter on them ST line or a simple test light connected to it full time
will tell what is happening.
the start line is only a single simpe wire.
12v on one side, the starter solenoid on the other.
if you power the starter switch up with a IGN power switch and the solenoid bangs shut then the switch is bad.
no if, and or buts. ( but id monitor it.)
if it goes 12v at power on.
then its shorted.
put a light on the sollenoid feel line, called ST.
its like the simples circuit in the car, way less complex than a dome light.
hang a meter on it and watch what it does.
or
somethings shorted to the Black/red ST wire. what ,who knows.?
