Hi All again – After following what Jerry suggested – way beck in April 4th ‘09- Ok it’s a 1998 Tracker 4 Cyl. 1.6L 4dr 4wd- close to 98K plus miles- bought it New-never had a problem with it-only in April ’09- I had a prob. With car going into low rpm- Jerry suggested to clean up the ISC it is sticking and definitely time for new timing belt . Did all that and I even tested ISC with a 9v battery like his video-to see it move & click.- Yesterday, Oct 29th- stopped at the deli-not far from home-on return the CEL comes on- driving I could feel when I stepped on gas pedal it was not responding quickly- if I did it gradually Tracker ran ok-but still had no “UMF.”-On straightaway’s was “eh” ok –downhill ok – uphill lack of power- driving on straightaway- the CEL blinked 3 times then went back to stay steady- I smelled what could have been that Catalytic smell-around the blinking period , but it also could have been other traffic- I think it was mine though. When I got home-drove into the driveway backyard and CEL was still steady –no more blinking- - I stuck my nose by the tail pipe while car was running and smelled nothing unusual - While idling in D or P it was smooth running but it seemed every 2minutes it would ”miss or hiccup” and go back smooth. RPMs remained normal- I had purchased back in April at Harbor Freight–the CEN-TECH OBDII – so I hooked it according to the directions- No DTC’s appeared. – I did it 2 more times at separate occasions to make sure-still No DTC’s - could I need to get a more advanced type OBDII for DTC's Need some suggestions please where to start- gotta get her back running before the cold weather!
Sounds like you are in limp home mode. But don't understand why, with CEL light on, you are not getting codes. It would appear that maybe tester is no good. You say you purchased it in April, but have you ever used it? Maybe faulty....Is there a dealership near you that would use their OBD2 tester to see if they can get codes for you? Then you could post the codes here, and find your answers.

Hi - Yes the CEL is on. Yes I used tester a few months ago on my Lumina- it gave me a reading.(DTC for a O2 sensor-.)....but nothing says it couldn't have gone bad- or became faulty,( eventhough I have taken care & iti s in a protective hard case)- Yep I might have to look see for a dealer no too far away- ya know I just hate driving it- in case to incur any other problems. Thx for the input.--> 98TM
I think you can drive in limp home mode for quite a while...frustrating, but would take you to dealer (or mechanic with OBD2). Just try not to find one who is on the top of a hill or anything. Might be tough getting there. But can't understand why CEL light is on, unless there is an ECU issue and codes. You may want to try to reset the CEL by taking dome fuse out for a minute, then replace and start car, see if CEL is still on. If so, there are definitely codes in there.
its a 98 so no limp mode its obd1 that limp. autozone or advanced auto? they read and clear codes. also remove + bat terminal and put it on - 4 10 sec. resets ecu and c if light comes back on. also blocked cat makes weird blowing noise, like blowing into paper twl roll with hand over end yes that noise. so have some one rev it up while u listen.

OK I'll be trying that reset of ECU with the +terminal- to ses what happens- if the converter was blocked- then nothing would come out of the exhaust , right or wrong? The exhaust is working- I can see the vapor and there is no converter smell- exhaust smell is just as before any problems -that steam air-gota put it on hold til tomorrow- visiting my sister & kids in PA today Haloween-SAT- ( she's a 911 WTC widow)-I welcome any other ideas- THX --> 98TM
