I have a 92, 1.6, 8V, 5sp, 4x4, tracker, Just rolled over 130k tonight, and has ran like a champ since I got it a couple years ago. I had to go to work tonight for half a shift and it ran like it has always has on the trip to work. Nothing was any different than any other trip. When I came out after work it started right up, but i noticed the idle was very rough and the check engine light was on. Anything above idle the engine is smooth, no misses, noises, smooth as it has been since I had it. However at idle, it surges a little, almost dies, runs rough, ect... I was running about 50 and floored it till 65 not one miss. I'm almost positive its not the gas, I filled up last week and it ran fine on the first 1/2 tank. When I got it I replaced plugs, wires and cap, and its only at idle anyways. Everything looks ok under the hood, no smoke from exhaust and was running at normal temp the whole trip. When at idle all you have to do is barely give it gas and it smoothes right up. Also the tach seems odd. Its kinda bouncing around and not really with the actual RPM. It's close to the rpm but bounces up or down around 300-400 RPM, it has also never done this before. Makes me think something electrical???? Since the trip to work was fine and all it did was sit in a parking lot. Any help would be great, thanks in advance.
Thank you guys for that link. I never knew that and it was easy to try. Heres the problem, I tried it and I got NO codes from it. I put the jumper in and turned the key on and the light just stayed on solid. I started it and it stayed on solid, not one time does it flash. I am positive I had it in the correct jumper, I looked at the pics and they matched up the same with mine.

you forgot to check for the nag switch.
if you have federal car (fed48 and not Calif car) then it HAS this switch.
1: rip it out.
2: or slide it one time. I call it the mileage nag or SES. service engine soon.
Sorry I was going to put that in my reply. I switched it and it didn't help, both positions it stays on solid. It shouldn't be on anyways. It came on at 120k and I flipped it (light went away), it just rolled over 130k on the trip last night so I wouldn't think it should be on.
I have flipped it a few times since last night, thinking it might be the issue. Could it be giving a false reading, since I have switched it so many times???
Does this mean ECU stuck in "limpmode"?? I don't know what this limpmode is, but besides idle this thing still runs like a champ. Could anybody explain what happens when in limpmode. I dont know why else it wouldn't flash codes. As soon as I turn the key on with jumper or no jumper it stays on solid.
I had the same problem at just over 100K. Parked at the bank with it running fine. Tried to fire it not even 5 minutes later and it would idle, and had surging issues randomly while driving. Turned out to be an arcing plug wire for me. Does your plug wires have a warranty?
Also had similar symptoms 10K miles later... my EGR passageways needed cleaning.
