Default High beam/low beam confusion

I've got an odd problem with my 1998 4wd 4 dr 5 spd Chevy Tracker. When I push the headlight switch forward the blue high beam indicator light comes on but it's actually the low beams that are on. Pull the switch back to low beam position and the high beams are on. I've only had the vehicle a couple months so don't know how long this has been going on. Any ideas?

do you have DRL ? that is always the first question, is that complicates the issue.

Yes, it has DRL, which seem to work as they should.

the pennsoil is pain, gee wonder if id buy their product?

1st all 4 of those fuses got to be good, check them carefully removed and with an ohm meter for less than 1 ohm. (they can hair line crack , dont trust eyes unless they are blown hard)

head light relay 1 is key.

if it goes dead so will the combo switch HI low. switch.

but some lights happen via the DRL pin 1 Red white wire, see that, it can ground this node
(when it wants(logic) and this gives you HL.

also the brakes fluild level and the brake diff. pressure will cause the DRL to PURPOSEFULLY
act wierd to get your attention. this is in the op guide. (free at all dealers, due to fear of product libality)
4 pages on the FSM 8A-102. 37 tests , and more on 98
motor running.
make sure the I/P bark lamp goes out when you release the hand brake, if it dont fix that first.
make sure the charge lamp goes out after starting. same , deal fix that first.
i dont have 98 fsm nor op guide so can not say way Wierd is, other that the HL will not operatate as you expect. when brake failure light comes on.

locations.
DRL is in front of ECU.
DRL resistor , you dont have one on 98

David,
Let us know what you find. My '96 has a headlight problem, too. My DRL's work OK. Dimmer switch in "low beam" position.......High beams on & high ind. light off.
" " " "high beam" position......No lights.
Dimmer pulled to "passing" mode............low beams on....high ind. light ON.

I haven't checked into this seriously yet, have other probs I'm working on.

keep in mind the Brake warnings , pass into the Head light DLR logic.
make sure the brakes are not faulting , the brake lamp must glow key on.
then when you release the hand brake the Brake lamp must go off.
motor running.

a meter and that drawing is all you need,
ask for help.
if you need test points and values.

Wow, that was fast. I knew by your other replies that you were a no BS expert tech. Thanks for the quick response! I'm actually watching my Cowboys right now and have learned more at this sight just "playing" than all I've learned from my local buds.
Thanks again, I'll let ya know what I find.
