I am working on trying to get a 91 8v Canadian Tracker project going. At first I could not get the ECM to flash any codes. I had it reworked with new capacitors and several traces patched. I am now able to get the ECM to flash 12. I have not got the fuel pump going (need to pull tank), but when I pour in some gas I can flash it up for a few seconds. My new concern is that the check engine light comes on and when I check it, I get code 53. This is not a California ECM nor a California car. I am wondering if it is possible that when some traces where patched, that it turned the ECM into a California model. Does anyone have any experience with ECMs going Californian?
53 has 2 meanings depends on what ECU you have , 56B30 ,or 56B40? what is it. the number?
some ecu's where Calif types are not germain to your car or year will throw code 53 for bad power ,bad memory or bad rom code.
from california perspective body (with extra ground pin) any ecu inserted is illegal save the real Cal. version.
is this car a VIN car, has one.
is this a 1.6L 8v motor with EFI and TBI .
is car automatic or manual
is car 5sp ?
more accurate spec on car things get far easier.?
all these cars a made in cami.ca.
april 89 to present.
this plant produces cars for CANADA E28 , USA FED E03, and Calif. E33.
so just saying Canada made tells its one of the above 3 ,
if you tell the VIN and look at the smog sticker under hood and look up.
all facts are now known.
here is 89 cAL sticker. http://www.kick-fix.com/specs/Body-T...California.jpg
we get 2 code 53 per year.
nutshell
if it is the cal reason.
1: ground the pin if cal ecu.
2: or un gound it . if fed ecu.
if not the CAL reason, new ecu.

In case I forgot to say, my '95 Sidekick was made in Iwata, Japan, I imported from Canada, (has DRL), Market code 03 (USA), JLX, 4A/T, 4Dr, 4WD, Hard top, Manual hubs, 1.6L 16V, Factory AC & Cruise, 133,000 mi. Converted IP to MPH for the US.
My ECM number is a 56B30, E2T41271 M, 0914B G1, US-MT
The VIN is 2CKBJ18U3M690****
It is a 1.6 litre TBI, 5 speed manual car.
I am not certain where to find the country codes. The sticker on the inside of the door is incredibly faint and almost impossible to read.
The sticker under the hood makes no mention of the US nor California. The engine family is MSK1.6TSFFCT
Near the bottom of the smog sticker it says CATALYST TBI/TWC/O2S/EGR
I do not know if all of the parts to the car are original. I bought it as a non-runner and I am trying to see if I can get it going.
If a Fed ECM received a ground signal, when normally it wouldn't, would it set a code 53? I am wondering if my electronics guy repaired a path that should have been left open.
