Default Sidekick - Mileage Related - First Long Roadtrip

Yesterday we (2 adults, 2 kids) took the first long road trip in the Kicker. I filled it up before leaving, and set the trip meter to zero. The trip consisted highway speeds, stop & go ( due to road construction) and a mixture of city driving.

254 miles later the gas gauge was on E. I pulled into the gas station and filled up the tank. It took exactly 8 gallons.

I'm sure I read somewhere that my model has a 11 gallon tank. Which means that 3 gallons are the reserve (so to speak). Is this correct?

I generally don't care about gas mileage. I drive a vehicle because that's what I need to get the job done. But, based on the miles traveled, I'm calculating roughly 31.75 MPG. Does this make sense?

By the way, long trips in a sidekick are not recommended if you want to be comfortable. I had to stop several times to walk out the cramps in my back side

That is very good. My new Tracker got 26 on the first half tank and I was thrilled, 23 on the next tank and 22 on the last. It keeps going down! My old 90 never did better than 21. I briefly owned 2 of the second gen Trackers and they both got 24 mpg in my commute. All of these were automatics.

thanks for data.!!
your tires must be stock. as over size under, report miles.
like mine, are stock and I get 30mpg easy. mix.
not done a 60mph long run yet.
your gas gauge is same as mine, 8gal, to E. and 3 reserve.

i figure gas is cheap.
in 1970 i paid 27.9 cents a gal. 13 cent tax included,
now i pay $2.79 a gallon, (lots more tax ,too)
everything else is 10 times more expensive.
my house was 27k, now its 270 k, same size too.
my car was 2k then, no its 20k.

so I to dont complain much.

I look forward to dual fuels , gasoline and LNG. cant wait to get a choice.

but you are reducing dependence on imported oil and starving more Arabs.
He their ok, just dont wont to go to war over fuel , sorry. I dont.

only thing stopping really fuel efficient cars is the government.
no one else.
read the regs. then decide, don't take my word for it .

cheers.
and HAPPY TRAILS!

I had a '91 that got 32 mpg as I commuted on the interstate. It was also a 2WD 2 door, so that's about right. My '94 4WD 2 door gets 28 highway.

My 92 4dr 4wd gets 30+ consistently. Big difference is 16v engine with 4sp w/OD tranny.

My tires on it are 245/60/15

It's good to know that mine is within MPG standards. Now I will ask my next question "What's involved in a complete tune-up" in another thread.

Thanks for the great replies everyone

One thing I do not see on the report is Speed and Elevation.

When I report Fuel Consumption I include Speed and Elevation on the checks.

For Example...

My 03 Impala has a 3.4 V6 and 116,000 miles.
If I drive at 75 MPH at about 1000 feet elevation I get around 28~29 Miles per gallon. If I use 10 Methanol fuel at the same speed I get 29~30 about the same elevation. If I run to 80 MPH is like 26 MPG. If I drive from Colorado to Kansas in Hwy 70 (down hill from 6,000 Ft to 1100 Ft) down hill) and is humid, I got last time 35 MPG driving at 77 MPH.

I noticed the same car is more economic with Damp Days than dry (HHO naturaly made? NOT !)

So there are more factors to do fuel consumption check.
