Cool rich exaust

my 96 tracker 1.6 litre 16 valve is loading up when running and im trying to figure what is causeing the problem. Ive done alot to it so far but today i come across a real stumper.when i was trying to get my fuel pressure i seen the gauge go up when i turned the key on but as soon as the fuel pump stoped running the pressure would drop off to zero pretty quick. so i tryed it again and when i put my ear down to air inlet i could hear the injector spraying.if i start the car and then turn it off the fuel pressure stays at 32 lbs.turn the key on and the pressure goes dwn.Im hopeing someone has an idea.injectors are now new and ive checked tps thinking it was telling computer to send pwr to injectors but it looks ok Thanks

Do you have any check engine light on if so get the code or codes and that is where I would start to attack the problem lots of little things that cause a engine to seem to be loading up or running rich things like o2 sensor, or temp sensor, bad map, or even a clogged cat converter, just some thoughts you are at the right place lots of help at this site and knowledge here

unplug the injector, see if it leaks ,it does and its bad.
how in the world do you hear that (i have viet nam ears so cant imagine)
im jealous. sigh. ( i laugh at the ear plugs answers, ever not hear small arms bullets wiz by, yah)

the leak down spec is here.
injector not leaking of course.

you do know you an hear them click with stethoscope and condemn them quickly by comparing them all (even a rubber tube if not $3 stethoscope)
press against side of injector.
i dont think your ecu is busted. rare.
unplugging it is proof and so is a noid light test.

if true, that is brilliant work there !!! thanks for post that is possible. I will now put my stethoscope down every bore like that. thanks. Not in any books(have 50) that i have. I love tricks, yes, feed me more....

ok, the injectors are spring loaded off,so unplug them and they can not fire.
period. (just fuel rated lawn sprinkers huh)?

some injectors are only fully close with spec pressure behind them, not sure about zuks,
but no matter, they must be closed, with no power to them.

data off my pump page----------------<data>----------------------------------
96-98 16v FSM specifications Rail pressure: (pg.6E3-A-36-37)

36-43 PSI, keyon, not started ( you may have to key on 5 times to build enough pressure, pump runs on 3 seconds)
30-37 PSI , idling. running , speeding. hehehe
25 PSI , after 1min. drop test.

Red face

I dont have any codes showing. I drained gas that was in tank by crossing relay and running through fuel rail.i had the key turned on to energise the pump.when fuel was gone. i put fresh gas in and changed the filter[thought someone put diesel or something in tank]. before i tried to start trk i took out spark plugs to get a compresion test.when i turned over engine it shot a stream of gass out.so i know that injector is on without engine running.150 lbs of compression in each cyl by the way.

when i herd spray i had air tube off air cleaner and could hear fuel through tube. so i unplugged injectors and the fuel rail held 32 lbs of fuel when key was on or off . im sure its not from injectors now they work great when power is applied.something is telling the injector to turn on when power is on but engine is not running

good.
the you can just measure the injector voltage with it connected key on.
voltage is 0 volts. (across it , dont measure to body)

if not ECU is hosed.or wiring harness shorted to ground,

this car fires injectors by.
12vdc is bussed to them all, at key on. full time copper feed from fuse.

then the ECU grounds them sequestential or gang depending on modes.
there are descrete transistors that do this ,very simple power transistors.

so the injector wire is grounding in the harness on that leaking injector. 99%tile.
1% ffail ecu or less,

my-96-ECU

tell me injector # and you can see what transistor is bad if it is in fact bad.
no guessing
I have 96. too. (i have this data on 8v, 92-95 16v, and 96 16v (and my 96 may be same as 97,98 too)

full data sheet on transistor too.

we only get 2 injector ground outs a year here.

its injector no 4 but i will check wireing harness tomorrow for short or problem.do you have schematic . i could ring out wires from plug on ecu to plug on injector if i had one. thanks for the direction. cant stand throwing parts at it til its fixed.

yes, do no throw parts.
yes, schematic, on my schamatic page
schematics to run engine
click left, middle , right, it has 3 pages. its all there.

right has INJ.

dont forget you can have the them cleaned for $18 at witchunter.com
most times, one can clean them, make sure coil is not open circuited first. they cant fix bad coils.

Thumbs up resolved

I found problem. no1 and no4 injectors were spraying when i conected harness plug to them so i decided to ring out the system i started at the firewall and each individule plug and found no 1 and no4 pins had cotinuity to 2 pins instead of only one .then i took apart plug in front of engine did the same test and found the fuel rail harness was ok.then i checked from plug back and found harness to be ok. i connected plug back in and then checked again fom injector back to firewall and all checked out. i started the engine and ran great.so plug in front of engine was either wet or corrided causeing short between 2 plugs .i took plug back apart an put dielectric grease on it and havent had any problems since. thanks for the input.
