Question Engine Clacking

Hi! I have a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick JLX with 4WD. I'm not sure where the car was made, but I bought it new in CA. I don't know the engine size, but it has 4 cylinders.

Today I drove it about a mile to a gas station, filled it up, then went through a drive-thru. As I was waiting in line it started clacking really loudly. I've never heard that sound out of it before. I tried turning off the A/C, putting the car in neutral, pressing on the brake, not pressing on the brake (as you can tell, I don't know much about cars). The clacking began again after each time I turned the car off. The other stuff made no difference, but it did seem like it wanted to jump forward when it was in gear (which was why I took it out of gear). I don't know if that was actual or in my head.

When I drove it home, the clacking went away. I have no idea what it is. The engine light and oil light comes on when I first turn the key on, but they both go out once the engine is started. The engine did not seem to be hot (according to the gauge), but the hood was really hot to the touch.

Thank you for any insight you can give - I haven't checked oil, water, etc., because I couldn't get the hood up while it was so hot.

check the oil level keep it full , never allow it to drop even a bit.

if the motor was clanking that is really bad news.
id not run it if it clanked. find someone who can find the actual source.

Thank you! I'll check the oil today and take it in tomorrow. Thanks again!
