Default Check engine code P0400

I've had this problem on and off for about 6 months. When I step on the gas and the trans downshifts I get this code. The code reader program says it's a recirculating exhaust problem. Would that be the EGR valve? possibly the port clogged in the throttle body?

2000 tracker 2.0 16v 4x4 4 door 4 speed auto and it's a red one ha ha ha.

I have this problem with my 2000 Tracker 2.0L also.It comes on now and then when deacceleratting from speed. I have cleaned the EGR valve ,checked EGR tube, checked EGR valve itself. I cannot find a problem so I just reset the CEL light. But sometimes the light resets itself so I know there is no real problem with mine.

its real, the light has 2 threasholds, Softfails and hard.
this is an arbitrary EPA rule.

?

ah the CEL comes on.
and it those P0400 right and no other code.

All I can tell you , is it is BAD and it will get worse.

if you had a good scan tool ,youed see the pending p0400 every day. or so.

clean the valve and or find the oriface and clean it.
see that top tube, made of SST and it enters top Plenum.
remove it, look in the hole, send photo to us, and then ream out the holes inthere.

up to 1998 (this form limit) we use a 9mm pistol brush.
on 2L im not sure, so look and tell us.

but 2000 are vastly Simpler, just Path , a valve and an oriface.
no modulator or 2 VSVs and all the bull.

easy as peach pie. be lucky.

Sorry I didn't mean to hijack the thread. I was just stating what my 2000 2L tracker does.
I can only hope it gets worse in my case so I can chase it down. But it is not getting any worse. I have cleaned and checked my EGR valve and checked it with an ohm meter per specs I found on a GM forum. I have pulled off the EGR tube,on the 2L it is as big as your finger and easily pulled off so you can tell it is plugged or not. My CEL light will come on,code po400 and if I don't reset it it will go back out. Sometimes I reset it just for GP and write down the mileage hoping to find a pattern. But no it comes on happen stance. If I try to make it come on by cruising and letting up on the gas,it won't but I forget about and just let the CEL come on its own it is when I am cruising and then let off the gas. Go figure
But then this discussion is in the wrong section.

your are over thinking this

there are 2 tests,
one cruise
one deaccel.

when it fails , the ecu stores the freeze frame.
you can look at the freeze frame data and tell instantly which of the 2 it was.

if the path is clean, then the EGR is sticking
the dealer has a machine that can exercise the EGR main , electrically so one can test it. and clean it.

all you can do is, unbolt it, and leave the conn. attached.
and then key on and off and pray it cycles.

if it cycles, then you can spray carb cleaner in it and cycle it somemore.

there ar e 5 or 6 step that must happen before the EGR test cooks off.

1 is HOT. in closed loop, and short delay. and dont have A/C on or other major loads.
2: is over 45mph. (over 19mph and over 45 on others, and some are 55mph , ouch) 2000? i do not know.
3: and 5mins.
4 steady speed.
test 2 happens when you cut gas.

do as above (well over 45) and the cut gas in gear, coasting in gear
and the EGR monitor 2 will cook of. Pass or fail.

until you under stand how the monitor runs, you will never understand how the CEL lamp works, The CEL lamp is just a POS idiot lamp.
you need a scan tool to see the pending's.
and under stand how many pending's it takes to get a CEL.
It is busted.

my wep page has the actual Suz, rule page for EGR. how it tests this device.

eg:
http://www.kick-fix.com/sensors/EGR/...tors-x_02a.jpg

page 2
http://www.kick-fix.com/sensors/EGR/...ors-x_03-a.jpg

i do not have 2000 books,so the exact nums can be diff.
but this is HOW it works.

notice how the rpm must be in a 700 rpm window.
this really fools folks, in to thinking the error is intermittent.

no , you are just conducting the tests wrong. (in a way of thinking)

it is a 2 second mouse trap test.
start car, get in the window (per the tables) and SNAP. pass or fail,

will not repeat UNTIL next COLD START !!!
