nah, no ecu problem
id dont think so. k.

Pinging , Detonation is what it is and is very destructive.
what motor is this , ?

is the check engine lamp on, or worse flashing.

if it is Pinging, dont run it, do not put heavy loads on it. None.

this motor is not known of pinging. (due to combustioin chamber designs)
but if you have super lean mixtures. ? maybe.

does it ping, ?
hot only
cold only
all the time
or just on hills.

onething that can make it ping is if it is overheating for any reason.
make sure radiator is full and 50/50 antifreeze. and RAD cap is good.
another thing is EGR malfunction.

explain driving conditions before and just after the pings?

I would start by checking that the ignition timing is correctly set.

i thought the new motors that is fixed?

but then , he never said.

i was thinking 2.0L motor with fixed cam senders.

do over

what you got
what motor
and if you have a dizzy did you unclamp it and spin it.
no.
is the IGN timing off. then the belt is slipped. if you have a belt....

sigh.

PS: our Vitara 420 has chain drive , cam, DIS (no dizzy ) COP motor.
or 416 motor is belt drive, and COP, no dizzy ,
2002

his profile is blank as is car spec.

Ignition timing is fixed to the cam but its not that unusual for someone to get the cam timing wrong

Default 2002 sq-420L , Vitara , a hot rod sport engine

sorry we were just pulling your chain, joking. no stress here.
this is nice motor, and if you are not ignoring a huge amount of chain noise
then it hasnt slipped. it will thrash mad, if bad.. the chain or tensionor. which can go bad at 150k. or more. if you fix tensioner first , you save the chains. when it goes bad.

I looked at Mitchell. those TSB are for updating the FACTORY ECU PROPRAMMING equipment. "pass thru programming"
no TSB posted at all for ECU issues on 2002s. that era. cant see them.

see All TSB by number to right at Mitchells.
this are a few recalls. on for fuel pressure reg. Grand vitara not reg. vitara.2002

id not expect any ecu problems since they have made this since 1996 and ever before on esteems. long history of solid reliablity. really.

your car is busted lets fix it. the ecu is fine, 99.99 %.

PINGING on a 2.0L DOHC , chain drive.

IS the CEL out , running ?
