Default weird code came back P0740

This code is not listed in the book but the two codes between this number are Torqe Converter codes..That's scary cause I just spent a fortune on the timing.
The kick seems to run fine. But I'm not sure if the tranny is not givving me all my gears. at 55mph it's doing 3grand rpms. Sound right? 70 MPH is 4 grand on flat highway cruising along steady.

How would I test the torque converter?

and the year car? they are diff. the years. but yours is 96+ i can tell that.
your profile and sig are zippo.

how did you get code.?

740 is std,.Federal code for TCC failure. my fsm for 96 shows not such code, only 773,771 9 where did you get this and how.

TCC is directly driven by TCm (no relay in 1996) im guessing on year.

the tcc solenoid can be replaced tranny in car.

TCC locks up on both 3rd and 4th gears on 4sp. 96.

book says, problem can be engine or tranny , is takes careful diagnosis.

in normal shift mode (not power switch)

tcc happens
in 3rd gear at 45mph and if that happens.
in 4th it happens at 58mph.

but all this depend on motor load and throttle position and is quite complex.
i can send the graphs to you and you will be more confused.

i suspect your Scan tool is of a generic variaty and shows generic codes instead of
accurate suzuki tranny codes.

getting the correct code 771 ir 773 can clear up the issue.

Sorry, It's a 98 JX auto trans. 1.6 16v 2dr.

Got the codes at AutoZone..So the cheapest solution would be to take it to a dealer or Jap auto shop right?

I'll be back..thanks

cheapest solution is to pull the codes.
look for DLC 2 , behind HL rear shell. ( HEAD LIGHT , shell rear is DLC1 and 2 , you must find out which one is tranny DLC) photo?
find it, put in a 2 cent paper clip.
and get the TCM to flash out the error code.

it my well tell you exactly what is wrong. (eg ,bla bla , is bad , or open or short , have list if you need it)

far cheaper, then have someone else fool around and waste 10 hours learning the zuk methods. TCM is unique on zuks.

eg: fails. and example action.
eg: open tranny rear speed sensor.
un bolt it , put in new, 20 mins work.

or it could be slipping tranny, a horror.

hope that helps.

see, it still could be a simple problem with a simple solution.
the FSM has a huge section called ON CAR TRANSMISSION diagnosis and repair.

fixing a A?T with out the shop manaul can be really expensive.

it could allow one to correct a problem that a shop charges $1500 to fix.
for $25 , you get a chance.

time or money.
