bitumen is, pavement right? (not dirt, not grass , not gravel)
concreto or Asphalto ?

never drive in 4wd ,on pavement.
go off road and seat in your seal. your idea is valid. beaks thru rust on shaft.

the seal on xfre case is piece of cake to replace. "EASY"
the axle seal is a SOB. Son of a Beach. a royal pain the booty.

here bitumen is coal.. not sure on driving on coal. ahahahhaha

thanks for posting.

SURE, ! and welcome down under , mate !
aok, as long as one of the 2 are unlocked (hubs or xfrcase) you will NOT wind it up.

and you are correct ,it will wipe off the rust (cross fingers)
is it leaking xfr case front shout?

that seal pops out easy as pie.

i use mine in 4wd on dirt (in my paddock) to pull down trees, after i , weakn them.
90 deg. pull , trick.

no center diff, so pavement (tarmac) ops is limited.

only down side is lower mpg. and wear and tear.
but the manual says do this , every few months. just for your exact reasons.

cheers, mate..

they yoke has a groove wear on the seal landing point.
this can make a new seal fail or even cause new seal to wear fast and leak.

there are 2 tricks to fix this.
1:
put tne new seal and seat it short. drive it in but not as much .
EG: drive is 1/8" short.
this forces new seal onto newer surface.
2:
or buy the ring the goes around it to fix it.
there are many companies that make these ring kits.
one is a bearing seal company, Timken makes them for one.

it can be fixed easy. with out a new yoke.
