Default Vitara occassional slow to accelerate

I've read through the forums and various posts regarding bogging down but my jeep doesn't seem to quite have the same symptoms.

Its a NZ 1998 2.0L manual vitara (escudo) with a J20 (swb), most of the time the car is fine, but occasionally I find there is little power when I go to overtake or accelerate quickly. For instance today, changed down to 3rd gear to get ready to overtake, then when way was clear pulled out put my foot on the floor and nothing happened, well, next to nothing, the revs climbed, but very very slowly, then at about 4000rpm it was like a 2 stroke hitting the powerband, and it opened up and I shot past the car.

However, it doesn't always do that, I had many other overtaking maneouvres today where it did not do that. I've had it in the past do the same thing, so its hard to predict when it will happen, it might do it twice in a row, then go a whole week without doing it.

So based on other posts I would rule out the MAF and ECU, but have perhaps considered it might be clogged injectors. Do bottled injector cleaners really work or would you only suggest a full strip down and clean?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
