Default 4 speed automatic trans?

Hi;

I have a 90 tracker with a 8 valve 1.6 engine. The trans is a 3 speed automatic. Is there a 4 speed auto trans that will bolt up to my 1.6 engine? At about 65mph I am turning 4k rpms and it would really be nice to have an overdrive automatic if it is possible.

Thanks for any pointers

There is definitely a 4 sp tranny (w/OD) but will it mount on your 8v engine I'm not sure?? Rear end is another potential variable. Someone here will know.

I have the 4 sp auto in my 92 16v 4 dr kicker and at 65 mph she revs right around 3k....

need new harnesses,
need TCM puter for tranny in dash (missing and its harness)
diff other parts too.
its a big job. like 10 posts here for this. long ones.

the stock 4sp. is shifted electronically .

try a 5sp manual and get over 30mpg.
the clutch is bolt in , no fancy harnesses.

just need flywheel back. to xfr case.

Thanks for the info. I figured the OD was electronic, so I was hoping all I would have to do is run a 12v wire to it. With what you are saying, I wont bother.

Thanks Again

Yes the 4 speed's OD is actually a 4th gear. It has TCC which might be what people think of "OD" on most cars.
My '95 Sidekick has a separate Trans Control Module, but it ties into a lot of signals from everywhere, like the TPS, etc, so I will bet it is a big job.

and OD is different than TCC lockup.

OD is a real gear. in the 4sp. i have spec if you want to read it , including gear ratio's all suz trannies. and axles.
we have world wide axle choice document too. many are made.

the TCC lock up is a solenoid that closes (12vdc and a switch, can do that sure)
and this locks the fluid coupling and reduces all wasted heat from this device.
it slips with out it full time.
this slipping wastes ,millions of gallons of precious gas every day in the usa.

4000 RPM is nothing.
it red lines at 7000 plus ( i forget exactly) be we know it.

would you worry about your 1000 cc suzuki motorcycle doing 4000 rpm?

then why the concern with this suzuki motor.?

who knows, maybe the same engineer designed both?? may be , right.

both are OHC motors. both run high oil pump pressure.
both use solid valve lifters.
both are high precision parts.
both are carefully EFI tuned motors.

RPM, in , and of itself, is not a factor in motor life.

we have well cared for motors with 250,000 USA miles on them.

100 k is walk in part.
200 k is easy if you change oil frequently and keep EFI and motor tuned.

IMHO
YMMV

run it , it like you stole it.

PS

go to wiki and look up , under or over square motors and RPM and torque characteristics. its all there. and more. a good read.

this tranny comes with TCC lock or not. (for a pure tranny perspective)
TH180 is the base name of this 3sp.

the suffix pn letters on the casing tell you if it has the lock device or not.
it is an option. (out of tranny factory)

one might (?) get a 3sp with this lock and put it in this car someway.

any tranny shop can answer ,exactly how to do this. (mix parts?)

then once you have your 3L30(Th180) tranny with TCC lockup ,
just add the switch. to the dash. ( or wire it to Autotranny ECU TCC PIN)

and all this can be done off car. ( followed by quick tranny swap)
no harness swaps, no tCM to find ( try to find a good one, ouch)

so there is a solution (theory) never posted here.

cheers.
