Default The bogging 98 JX sidekick -solved finally

Some might remember me posting lots of questions about my 16v 1.8 98 JX auto trans. 2door bogging every time I gave it gas.

I worked on it for two months. Did a full tune up and lots of other things fixed the EGR valve and changed out a few sensers. No fix. Tested the fuel pump, Reset the TPS, cleaned the IAC still no results. Finally I decided to take it in since I dont own tools for the next trouble shots in line.

The mechanic figured it out in 5 min after I told him the list of work I did. The timing was 3 teeth off and slipped when he attempted to readjust it. He's going to fix it now. I'm kinda bummed cause if I had the tools I coulda figured that out pretty easily but I'm happy to get it fixed.

congrats, first slipped chain ive ever seen ,that didnt scream to be fixed.

must at made a huge racket , yah?
you will need all new chain and followers and hydra. tensioner.
or maybe something failed catastrophically, like a guide break up. but that too, cause huge chain WHIPPING.
big cost.

thanks for feed back.

Went and visited the kick today. It's all fixed but cant pay for it till Friday..big $$

Heres what happened to it. The previous owner took it to a Suzuki dealer in Ceder Park, TX to get the timing belt changed..They forced the harmonic balancer on the moter shaft by pounding it on instead of lining it up gently and pushing it on. The woodruff key which is about 1/8inch thick steel was bent 90 degrees. The mech said he couldn't get the new key to sit right cause they damaged the groove the key sits in. He did some grinding to get a custom fits and says it should be fine. He said to fix it right you'd have to buy a new shaft which is really big $$ so I opted out.

I hope he's right. Wish it could be welded on or something. Any suggestions?

Thanks for everones help. I didn't fix it myself but I know that moter really well now.

your first post said 1.8L , that threw off all answers.
you dont have a 1.8L but a 1.6L .

the 1.8L is DOHC , chain motor.
the 1.6L is SOHC, belt motor and both are interference motors.

absolutly
the key does nothing but help during the align...

answer is hear.

Repairing damaged crank and replacing seal. - Page 1 of 1

same as my miata 96 and 99.
but miata is shorter snout so worse.

new bolt , new cog. use loctite if slot is sloppy.
the prime issues is getting key back at TDC , some can be hard to find.

newrebuilt crank is 200. not counting labor

if he pounded it on , that is wrong.
it is a slip fit.
if not a slip fit, he failed to make it so.

slip shod work. no pun.

I thought all 16 valve engines were 1.8L and 8valves were 1.6. Sorry for the confusion. I know its a 16 valve for sure. Get the kick back Friday..cant wait.
