First off I need to give you a little info about what I used to drive.
A 1966 plymith fury/413cu. with two ray-ja 550 twin turbo chargers. It had a bench seat in front and back.I My trany was a 327 auto with a manual first gear from Crysler performance. Yea thats right a manual fisrt gear on a automaic tranyand colum shift..So no floor shifter. Now all this info will help you undersatand why I bought a tracker And oh ya I found an old time slip from Keystone drag way ... 4.6 time for 0 to 60 mph. Now this was a car that when you went to the drive-in (do they still have them ?) you always got some desert if you know what I mean.
Well I got maried and ended up driveing something senceble. One day my daughter came home from school and asked if she could borrow the family truck. Wow I sudenly realized this little girl wasn't 12 any more. So it was time to buy her a set of wheels. Now you gotta remember what I drove in the past and now its time for my daughter to have her very own wheels . So now my wife and I go shopping for a car. With the list of options I as a parent feels every young girl needs in a set of wheels.
The first thing is it has to be 4X4 and not a big pig on gas.
My wife and I looked at a couple of fords , chevys, and a dodge.and on the way home we spotted this 89 GMC tracker. So we decided to check it out.
This tracker had 4X4 and a floor shifter---perfict for my daughter in fact it had two shifters on the floor. Wow this was great two shifters between a couple of bucket seats. This was great because it kept the driver and passenger apart. in fact I tryed to shift over from the passenger side to the drivers and was defeated by those two sticks sticking out of the floor. That was just what I wanted. My wife and I decided to check out the back seat and it was so tight that a couple of racoons couldn't even make out back there. Just what I wanted. Now its time for a road test. I put the tacker in gear and hammered the gas to the floor boards and what do you know, I think I heard a tiny chirp as the wheels desperatly tryed to lay some ruuber.
After all this I felt that this was one set of wheels where nobody is going to get any desert if you know what I mean.
I was once young and ho-- and this whould have been the last set of wheels I would ever buy. But now I'm a daddy and I think its perfict for a young atractive lady.
So I bought the thing and have slept soundly ever since.
Do not underestimate the ingenuity of teenagers, does it not have reclining seats?Never have a VW bug?Chevette?Hell were you never a teenager{I was till last year, and I'm 59}where there's a way.Never relax.

you can...
scoot the front seats all the way forward,
put the stick shift in first gear,
remove the head restraints,
recline the front seat backs to the same level
as the rear seat cushion,
recline the rear seat backs a bit,
and...
Voila!
(that's French for something...)
a lumpy bed!
Ooh-la-la!
(that's also French for something )

WoW am I ever glad no one told me this six years ago when I bought my first tracker. Talk about a self induced false sence of securiy.......Lmao
However I need worry no longer about that.
I may have created a 4X4 monster . (which I still pay to have fixed) So far my darling daughter has come home twice with No exust system, a four foot peice of chain link fence wraped around the rear end and once with a front bumper from a ford bronco2. Which I don't even want to know about.
some monster 4x4 f250 lost his left rear wheel today , my right jerk of steering saved me. landed where I was. ( fresh undies)
big hug tire bouncing 6 foot hops down freeway. no fun.
i think the air bags , killed reclining seats so 96plus will not do bed thing.
my 91 is a perfect flat bed , reclined. nice......
GRC1,
I enjoyed your post and I appreciate the humor you showed in writing it. .... But, just in case someone took it as a serious endorsement of an 89 Tracker as a new driver's first car, let me offer a dissenting opinion for balance. I would not provide my first-time driver with an 89 Tracker for three reasons, all related to the fact that new drivers are much more likely to be involved in accidents than more experienced drivers. First, there are no airbags. Second, it is so small that there are minimal crumple zones for occupant protection. Lastly, inexperienced drivers are much more likely to lose control of tall but very short wheelbase cars like the Tracker than of conventional sedans. I guess my perspective is different because I had boys and not girls. I might see it differently if I had a 16 year old daughter, especially if she were pretty.
Hi and thank you for bringing up a very important point that I should clarify.
No I will not and no I can recommend a first time set of wheels for anyone,
My humorist but true story is about how and why we got our first tracker. It is not a recommendation to go out and buy one for your self and or kids. That is a choice that only you and your situation can answer.
So please remember I am only relating my own true story.
That was 100,000 miles ,6 years, and two trackers ago. With no accidents or speeding tickets And yes , Big differace between girl and boy driving 4X4s
Dont worry, imho, once you start trying to find the safest car in the world ,you either go crazy , broke or some someone changes all the crash dummy tests.
just tell siblings, never trust a green light!. (look left first) no crumple zones on left side.
but this car has a real frame , unlike many cars. That has value !
defensive driving is #1 , nothing else compares. as does Cell phone off.
saw a cute blond in fast lane with dome light one, 70mph. text'ing like no business.
i kept wondering way is she looking in her lap. for long periods.
i crept up beside her, and behold, Darwin in action.
i see this 100 times a year. (texting, reading book in lap, putting on mascara, etc)
they discovered that the more safety features on cars, the more they are abused.
they think they are invincible. (watch them run lights, cell in ear.)
(Large SUV are worse, they are isolated from all)
