Default OK; Looking @ a '96...bacause of you-know-who...

SOMEONE (starts w/ 'j' ! ) - put a bug in my brain for an OBDII model, so I am going to look today at a 96 4x4 MT 16v w/ a/c. (unsure of mi.)

I saw the pics to check places for underbody rust, can anyone suggest other potential trouble spots?

Any other thoughts on common issues?

Can I get it to show codes w/o OBD scan tool?

Body/interior very clean, supposedly starts, idles, drives right; everything works...asking $1500.

What say you?

thanks...

Sounds good if there is no rust. Just make sure you take it for a good long test drive. And remember to check the rust spots such as Under the doors(where drain holes are located),around front struts, around rear lights, floor boards ,ect.
don't forget to check 4X4 shifting and hubs. Take tracker/zuki on highway ---no shimmy--good.
Don't forget to make list of things to check because it is easy to forget.

Also open hood, with motor stopped and keys in pocket, put hand between rad and fan blade. now gently run fingers on rad core. if rad cor fins brake or fall off then rad core is rotten.

You can buy cheap OBD2 on feabay for about $40 (elm327)

Will owner let you do compression test.
Can you do a code scan before you buy.

Also one last thing , but don't tell owner, find piece of WET grass .
put tracker in 4X4 high and turn wheels to right and hammer gas. You only want to go ten feet and lisin for any noise. Now do same with wheels turned left .and try to notice any strange noise. Remeber to go VERY SHORT distance. You only want to go about ten feet doing this --no more and be really carefull

BE CAREFULL

Also don't use your lawn , use one afew blocks away--best not to PO wife.

W/o scanner; what is the CEL procedure on '96?

As far as the 4x4 test; am i listening for binding/ noises?

Thanks for the quick response; leaving in a while...

...found out 145K; concerns? price too high?

The whole idea is to get all the tires to spin at the same time with some resistance on them (usually can't get same results if tracker is just up on blocks,)
Now what you are lisining is for some unusual sounds.
1) bad if you rear sound like wire hitting sheet metal
2) loud tapping sound
3) shimmy or binding feel or possibly wheel churp (wheel grabs tracktion on and off)

Above all else be carefull, If you don't feel good about this then DON'T do it. Remember you are not doing burn outs. You are checking over the mechanics of thomething you are going to buy.

Good Luck

I don't think so But I am not as well versed in pulling codes as some of the other members of this forum. So I can say I don't no and cannot answer your question.

If the CEL light is not on , then that is a dam good indication of no major problems. Make sure the light dose do its one or two second turn on while starting the tracker,. Unscrupulus dealers have been known to take the CEL light out completely so its not on when you take it for a test drive.

JUST A $25 CODE READER AT HARBOR FRIGHT ! (PUN BUT SERIOUS)

just a code reader , is cheap and all cheap ones read this car. it is the simple one interface. do you need a link i can give one.
everyone ( or a family ) should have at least a basic reader. IMHO. (pass hat)
most can tell if the monitors have run to completion.

CEL out (running)
plug in Code reader, see no pendings.
see that all monitors are complete. (meaning the joker didnt just reset them so you will not see CEL on running.)

once monitors run out.
then all is known.

example , if he reset it and doesnt drive over 28mph , the EGR 2 monitor will not run.
thus not showing the fail. (a dirty trick)

I bought mine with EGR fail and got discount. we can fix that ,easy.

no tranny whine , in idle.
no running whine. from xfr case or tranny.
sounds like nice car. tell me addrsss. heheheheheheheh

- Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

goes on sale from time to time for $28

note it does read out Emission readiness. ( monitors)

there are up to 13 monitors.
but just few on 96.

EGR, CAT, Closed loop, O2 monitors. etc.

pretty much best price anywhere.

gee even amazon has it

AmazonAmazon

comments are accurate, it works and works good, and china to english manual is bad. but who cares.?
all you want or need is what is no the LCD.
anyone here can help you.

notice he run the car until the monitors all cleared and passed, then drove thru inspections.
can be done.

key must be turned all clicks from off Clock wise but not started.
accessory position is a NO GO. (not in manual)
