Default Engine ID?

Hi all-

Great forum; very helpful.

Quick question:

Looking at purchasing a Samurai w/ kick motor. How can I determine year easiest? (...1.6 8v, east coast USA, was told it's OBD1).

I do not have access to vehicle and am relying on seller to look/tell.
Computer part # will tell?
Markings on block, maybe?

I would like to determine year; then I can find out who made swap harness and that it is complete w/all sensors, wiring...

Thanks; standing by...

all are obd1 upto 1995 , inclusive.
all have (1.6L) have sn on lift side of motor to bell housing junction.
G15Lnnnnn
the L , is year. and matched perfect with VIN year digit.
if you need list hollar.

I do not have access to vehicle and am relying on seller to look/tell.
Computer part # will tell? i have all ecu pn, for usa. need it.
Markings on block, maybe? yes. all.

dont know what this means.

codes older than this , you need older list.

id recommend a 92-98 sidekick motor
and
efi off 92-93 if short cash
or efi off 96 or newer if you want OBD2 , which is real nice.

you will need VSS sensor or speedo cluster that has it.

Thanks.
Exactly what I needed.

To be clear: the Samurai already has this 1.6 8v kick motor; but I was trying to ID the year...as I did not perform swap (Sam is '87, sidekick motor=unknown), I will determine which vendor provided harness to be sure it too, is complete.

I will have seller get s/n from motor by bellhousing as well as ECU #.

I was wondering if VSS was going to be an issue; the 87 Sam cluster has no VSS (or CEL, for that matter)--and this is one of my concerns.

I can add a lamp for CEL, no?
How to add VSS? Can I fabricate w/ magnets and reed switch to '87 Sam cluster? or elsewhere? One vendor charges $50 + shipping both ways; I wonder what parts they use to do conversion?

Mr. Jerry-
You are a wonderful, helpful human being and I sincerely hope it all comes back to you.

Regards.

thanks.
yes, ECU:
8v run a -56b30 ro -56b40 ECU , one is MT other is AT. best one for 8v.
worst is 94 + due to EGR imperial storm trooper issues. hahahah

ecu will get real upset sans VSS.
CEL lamp is just 1 wire and power to other side. good to have.
the vss, is just a reed switch that is next to speedo magnetic coupling.
a stock speed0 can be modified. ( you saw , ppl selling them i see)
i have photos.

off , my vss page. is this

Sidekick Speedo Cluster 91 to 95 - Page 1 of 1

see 2nd to last photo for vss placement (this is stock 91 head)

hints. on speedo work
nevers:
1: remove any needles.

once face is off, remove all rear screws.on Flex PC side. back side.
then whole speed guts comes right out of front.

leave front alone, set front down on soft beach towel folded. (or the like)

now you can work at the rear of the actual speedo.

if you have milage switch, then just unconnect it , it is not wanted or needed.
some mileage nags are physically switches with a cam others are pure software that count vss clicks inside the ECU. (mine)

the VSS, allows the ECU to KNOW you are moving, and many things do not happen if it can not detect rolling .
including , EVAP,EGR and Deaceleration fuel cut and , even using the correct AFR fuel tables !
even cruise control , ahahahahah

with this advice, one could put in a tiny reed switch(get the smallest you can find)
and just RTV it in as close to the mag ring as possible.
then using a continuty tester ,check it.

the wire it out to a conn. of some sort.

i can tell you are wanting to try. go for it , Tiger!

Default a sense of humor as well?

Cruise.
Samurai.
VERY funny...would need a tilt sensor to work only downhill...

Although the add on cuises these days works GREAT (w/ a VSS! ha!)
( I had auto aftermarket co. for 20+ years; vehicle converter)

yes, I had seen your site, and did not know if the old factory Sam speedo had the mag assbly.
I see it should be very little trouble to add CEL & VSS...

I wonder what else may not be complete now?
I think I will need to use your sensor page when I go to inspect/complete sale.

After reading posts and your page, I think I will be able to get it sorted, regardless. I agree it is better to know, not guess.
