Default No air bags! sell it

OK here we go. 91, tracker, two door, 4x4, auto, 137K, stock, yellow, Best top soft tops, not much rust, very solid doors, small ding at front left quarter panel. I bought it as a car for my son and I to work on and so we started to replace some parts. Then my Daughter wanted it and since it has no air bags my wife and I feel it is better to sell it and get something newer with more safety features. I bought it from a guy who had the timing belt replaced and a full tune up. my son and I replaced the fuel filter, new Monroe sensatrac shocks and struts, new rotors, loaded calipers, front bearings and seals, warn lockout hubs. It runs and drives great. The bad is the driver side rear bearing is starting to leak and a crack in the windshield along the bottom. No AC. Any one interested in taking over? I live just outside Chicago IL by O'hare airport. I have all the parts for the back brakes, bearings and seals, but I do not wish to pay a shop the labor to change it out as this is beyond my capabilities. Considering the value of all the new parts I was thinking of $2,400.00? madski4@comcast.net

It is when it is your (new driver) daughter behind the wheel.

Default Wear your seat belt!

I’m and EMT with a fire department and have responded to several car accidents. The most important item for safety is the seat belt. I’ve seen several accidents where the driver had a broken clavicle (collar bone) caused by the shoulder strap when the air bag had been deployed. The seat belt caused the borken bone before the driver hit the air bag. The seat belt / shoulder strap combo is far safer than just an air bag.

Most fatality accidents that I have seen involve some type of side impact, not frontal impact. Those who died in a frontal impact probably would have died anyway due to the extreme destruction of the vehicle (high speed).

If air bags are the primary reason for your decision, get your kids a car with side air bags too. They will help.

I recently purchased a 2-door Sidekick for my daughter and she loves it. I’m more concerned with roll-over than air bags, but I know she wears her seat belt harness.

I'm thinking $2.4K is a bit high...

(you asked!)

I've found that the air bags between the ears have a far, far greater effect on survival than the air bags in the dash. In fact I'd go so far as to say that the ones in the dash are insignificant in comparison.

I'd have to agree with this, teach your daughter (& son) defensive driving skills & it will go much further than any other safety equipment. Another point is: the 1st gen airbags are known to cause injury to ppl of smaller stature, they're designed for a 180lb 5'9" dummy, which is rather silly since they don't drive real cars. It's also why there are now 2nd gen airbags, which deploy with much less force. I wish i could retro-fit them into my '96.

It is better to suffer a minor injury from an air bag and live than the alternative. Young people some times drive to fast for conditions these vehicles can become unstable very easily. I have had my Tracker for 20 plus years and I still treat it with respect.

Thank you all. We agree that a newer car with front and side air bags is what we will be getting her. and perhaps lower to the ground.
I guess $2,400 is a bit high. I'll see what my best offer will be. My son and I had a great time together working on it and that was way cool.
