Default Exhaust Smell Inside and Low Idle

I just purchased a '94 Sidekick JLX 16-valve. It basically runs like a champ with a couple issues. First, it seems that when I have the air blower on regardless of whether or not it is set to recirc mode, I get a bit of smell that I presume is exhaust when I am stopped. Under speed there is no smell. The smell is a really chemically smell like the inside of a tennis ball can, not a hydro-carbon like smell like a rich exhaust. I haven't investigated it yet, but my current plan is to check out the tailgate seal and put it on ramps and poke about, but was wondering if anyone else has encountered similar and what their findings were.

Also, it seems like with A/C on it idles fine at about 800 rpms (according to the tach) but with the A/C off, when it is up to temp it seems to idle down to about 200 rpms. It doesn't seem to stall out, but I would like a more consistent idle. Any ideas?

TIA
Andrew

Default bad idle, bad heater core? 94 16v

look of coolant leak just at fire wall RH passenger side , adjacent to the heater box.
leaking core.

your ISC is dirty clean it with carbcleaner.

idle is 800 hot and normal
A/C on , is 1000 ( a function of ISC and ECU )

if a/c off, the isc will hold 800 if
in drive
Fan on and HL on. same time, that is what it does.

bad idle.

the ISC is a slave actuator of the ECU.

welcome and cheers.

Thanks for the info. I looked where the heater core lines go through the firewall and found that there was no grommet there, just a gaping hole. I used a bit of Armflex pipe insulation tape (not a 100% seal) and the exhaust smell has decreased dramatically. still a slight whiff, but as I said, the seal isn't 100%. Why would someone remove the grommet?? Any idea where to find it new? Part #?

it was exhaust. bad.
id look over every square inch of Fire wall.
and look for rust under the body , everywhere.

CO (carbon monoxide ) will make you sleepy just before you pass out.
if your lucky , you get a head ache first , as a warning .

after it attaches to the red blood cells, you in deep doo doo.

how do you spell Hyperbaric chamber.......

i know a couple that parked on a snow bank, and idled motor , and well they are not here now.

I'll definitely look into it further. Certainly entirely familiar with the dangers of CO. Preaching to the choir. There is not a spec of rust on the vehicle. None. Thanks for the Monkey doo doo tip. Would that be available somewhere like Home Depot?

Oh, does anyone have the part # and a source for the actual grommet?
