Default Engine temp = performance changes

So, my kick runs very cold. like, just above the cold mark, regardless of how long i've driven it. Would running cold make the ecu think something is wrong? It doesn't run so cold that the engine is constantly idling high to warm up, but it does run close to that cold. i get around 23-24 mpg constantly, and i am thinking that if i change the thermostat it will run warmer, but with better performance.....

Thoughts?

in the first days if FI people put colder t-stats in to trick the computer. sometimes it works sometimes it doesent. My suggestion would be to fix whats wrong and be happy with better gas mileage.

How do you know it's running cold? Just by the gauge? IR heat gun? If you're going by the gauge reading, then it could be a bad gauge or temp. sending unit. On my 91 Tracker, I had a similiar problem so I short circuited the sending unit wire to the block (just under the thermostat housing w/ single yellow white wire) and the gauge went to full hot. Bad sending unit. Good luck

Thanks for the tip Ranger88den. Yes, I am going by just the guage. I am starting to wonder if the thing has a thermostat at all. The guy I got it from must have bathed daily in snake oil. heh. I've spent the last month undoing everything that he has done to this rig. Thermostat and air filter/intake mods are going to happen this weekend.

On the thermostat, remember the little bleed hole goes to the front and some use gaskets and some use an O-ring seal around the thermostat perimeter. Go to jtgh's website (see his signature) I think he has this info. there. Good luck

hey, we have the same snake oil dude,
I searching for air cleaner parts too.. cold AIR (not so) mod.'s.

do the ir gun. $10
and they changed the thermostat well , on these cars and lost the sn ranges of applicability (TSB on it)

my hard to find parts page and overheating links to this. and the TSB.

in a nut shell.

deep well , stat houseing needs the sorround rubber gasket
shallow well , needs only paper gasket
and never BOTH.
i run 192-195F in all cars to up efficiency. (1mpg)?

the gauge is not marked with any numbers, so it is just a refr. for if you see it do something diff ,then last year.
