Alright guys, my Dad has bought a '89 Geo tracker 5speed, 4X4, it'll start up and run for a while until it starts smoking and it'll keep running until it floods the plugs out, so here is what we've done and it still does it: New plugs, wires, Oxygen sensor, map sensor, checked vaccum lines, replaced the injector too. So, we've done all of this and its still the same. We are thinking about replacing the whole throttle body. Do you guys think that would fix it? any ideas would be great tho.
Yes it is, but really that is something I forgot to add, we did also replace that as well. we replaced it and the map sensor off of the crashed one I've got, they are good parts we checked them out.
From what everyone has told us and from what we've learned own four of them for the last six years, these parts are the same. as for the EGR it seems to have a new one on it already. I also meant to add that it had been setting for a few years because of a bad fuel pump, also it has a brand new head that was installed just before the fuel pump went out.
Its very easy to do stall live tests and its an accurate way to check if there's a problem in the EGR valve or not since the symptoms can lead to think it could be due to stuck EGR valve.
I doubt its the EGR... Smokes... WHAT COLOR? Its an 89' model.
with Key on, check engine light on? How about after starting? If so pull the codes, and in general check for a "code 12"
I have a feeling it has a dying ECU because it keeps giving the engine fuel. I say its an 8v and talk of injector being replaced and no change... although -- did you buy new o-rings for injector when replace? Try replacing the fuel pressure regulator and the o-ring on it for a quick test off the junked 96 that you have, but check ECU before this!
Reply back with findings for more information. Because after that, I run to TPS, and other items/sensors due to the fact it RUNS. What is motor compression if you know by change? I suspect possibly too the timing is off... but these are other factors if the above test of ECU fails.
all good.
Check engine light what does it do ......?????????
i say engine is rich as a pig due to
cracked exhaust manifold
or limphome mode , the ecu dropped to. (rich and retarded timing = limphome)
89 is old ,
no missing/bad header gasket , exh gaskets on head and header good no warpage allowing illegal fresh air in side manifold. to , fool the 02 oxy sensor. BAD news.
check compression as cody says,, timing of cam.
ignition timing, if motor checks out
then check fuel pressure.
65psi is bad.
30 is good. full spec.; is on my pump page., see it on my link below. my sig.\
Alright, we have already checked some of that stuff, the Compression in each cylinerder was about 100psi, we also thought the timing was off at first and checked it out and the marks are perfectly lined up, we did replace the O-rings, now the somewhat tricky part, the Check engine lights sometimes comes on and stays on, but then at other times it comes on and then goes off once you start it. Also the smoke is a dark black and smells of pure gas.
Jtgh,
The head is brand new and was replaced not long before the fuel pump went out, all of the gaskets and even the nuts and bolts look to have been replaced.
Now that I've seen what replies I've gotten it sounds to me its either then ECU or the Fuel pressure is too high.
Now here is a quick question incase its needed will the ECU from a '94 Tracker, auto, 4wd, work in an '89 Tracker, 5spd, 4wd... I know sometimes these parts have to be 100% alike and was wondering if these do or not. Thanks for all the replies guys!
