1.6 16 valve zero tolerance?

Hey there my name is Shawn and this is my first post on the forum.

I've got a 96 Sidekick 1.6 16 valve and I'm about to overhaul it. My first question is, is this a zero tolerance engine, if not how much room do I have to work with when shaving it?

what will you be shaving , head, block deck. what.?

the fsm has all that , and tons more. i recommend a FSM.
for what you are attempting to do.

did you do compression and leak down to see if maybe it only needs a new head.

i read somewere that you can take .020 off the head, im going to do this when i get my cam back from a regrind, it bumps it up to 10.5 for compresion.

its in the FSM, all the data, if you need 1 number ,then you need them all.
really, what good is 1 number if you are rebuilding.

Point taken, I think I've got a haynes or chilton kicking around, I'll have to dig it up...But just to confirm, by FSM you mean Factory Service Manual and not Flying Spaghetti Monster, right?

yes. FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL a, whole $25 on fleebay, search "tracker service manua" exactly , no quotes, scads of those.

using a Hanyes to rebuild a motor is, like doing self dentistry. ( see Mr. Bean do it on Youtube)

its all in the book.

get one, for your year range.
96 -98 would work great

if 1.8L ,get Exact car and year.
