Default 1.8 timing chain tensioners

I have a 1998 Sidekick Sport 1.8 and I'm about to replace the timing chains and tensioners, but I'm confused. The new upper tensioner has instructions on how to prime it before installation. The lower one, however, does not. The new lower one has both a black and white plastic tab spacer holding it in the retracted position and comes with a plastic yellow stick. Does anyone know if the black/white spacers identify something in particular? And whats with the plastic stick?

I've been using the Haynes manual, but if you have the factory procedure I sure would appreciate that!
