Is there a moderator who can post a sticky thread titled something like "Newbies read this first"? It could serve as general guidance to make the newbie experience more satisfying.

JTGH,

I know those parts very well, a PDP8-S to be exact, and a lear seigler ADM3 terminal, yikes, you are old...
You probably know what a RIM loader, and a Bootstrap program are...

No, there isn't a moderator, if you mean someone who reads every message
before deciding whether it can be posted or not...

But we do have the Tattle-Tale icon in the left margin of each post,
(White triangle with exclamation point). We can click on that when we
find a post offensive, such as someone trying to sell us Nike shoes.

"94box" is officially The Moderator, so maybe click on their name under the moderator box
(at the bottom of the forum listing) and ask them about sticky posts.

yes, we used to snap in the codes (op) 1 by one and boot from paper tape.
one day we upgraded with this huge box. it had an array (matrix) of diodes.
each one cut for a 0 or a 1 , (no proms yet, then came rom loaders)
this box mimic'd the whole paper tape boot. it allowed use to reboot 1 hundred memory testers, we made the first dynamic ram chips. (with one finger, no more load and go)

no floppies then.
ah the good old days.

Your "diode rom" sounds cool. One of the supervisors wanted us to make a bunch of fiber plates you push against the front panel switches one at a time, for the 50 or so codes to be loaded into it for the RIM loader, we ran him off...
These were used on Merganthaler-Linotype typesetting consoles at the Detroit News. We would dream up our own little programs to prank the operators, and we learned that way. Supervisors didn't like that, thought we shouldn't have fun, couldn't run that one off, I worked for him, lucky me.
