Default shifting issues

hi i,m having problemes with my tranny first gear is hard to get into sometimes. when it's warm (50 degree F and above)out reverse grinds sometimes and 3rd gear grinds when downshifting unless i'm dogging 4th then it goes in smooth all the other gears are fine. during the winter only 4th and 5th don't grind the only thing that seems to help is double clutching works most of the time. the clutch pedel feels fine no slipping i checked the linkage and is pulling 1" . i don't know if this is a tranny problem or a clutch problem. i hopeing it's a clutch problem and a bearing is seized or something.

most of it sound to me like a plain worn out transmission. The reverse issue sounds like your clutch freeplay needs adjusted.

I would change the gear oil in it and see what that does. If your grinding issues arent resolved then be looking for a rebuild or a used one

i changed the fluid in october right before the winter because i knew it was going to get worse with the cold weather(lots of metal shavings on the drain plug). I wanted to do the clutch this summer and change the fluid again but i guss a new clutch is'nt going to help. it has 188k miles and the original clutch. I was hoping the clutch would go first

were the metal shavings bronze colored? If so then you might be good with a new set of syncros and some bearings. as long as there are no heavy metal flakes or chunks.

then just get this

Default key words missing. see red (bad clutch )

there are many test points.
parked,
moving
shifting up,
shiftiing down
shifting it fast or slow. (only fast grind?, syncro's on 1 to 5)

I will ignore all comments save 1. Reverse.
this is at 0 mph. you are idling, and you depress clutch ALL the way to floor.
wait 5secs. and engage reverse , IT GRINDS.

this is always bad clutch.
until you correct this problems the others are all a distraction.

temparally reduce clutch free play from 1/2 inch at pedal to zero.
measured at pedal , adjusted at bell housing. cable end.
do for 1 hour test . no more.
better,
yes, bad clutch. (zero hides or improves shifting)
1/2" play fixes it, well , do you maintenance , all cable clutches need service.
no change,at all , very bad clutch. dragging like a dog.
good luck
glad you put in fresh fluid.

clutches have many fail points.
cracked disk. warped PP, cranked PP, bad weak or warped PP springs.
throw out siezed and collapsing
and many more, all will do as you say.

but for get that,
if you grind from zero starting in ANY GEAR.
the clutch is bad or maladjusted.

how exactly is freeplay measured i was able to press the clutch and look at were the cable pulls on the clutch lever on the side of the tranny and see it moving as soon as i press the clutch. the clutch really dose not start to disengage untill i press the clutch in past 2".

first gear does not grind just hard to get into sometimes
shifting speed does not matter only double clutching seam to help when upshifting and the only gear that grinds when downshifting is 3rd

it was 60 degrees F out today and almost no problems just reverse grinds sometimes and downshifting into 3rd grinds, tommrow i'm going to try to wait 5sec before i put into reverse and see if that helps.

if youd just look 1 inch below my post , it says. click me... why not do that.

then type control +F (windoz search) and search clutch.
bingo.
ahh here it is.

My clutch is sick what is wrong

see photo id 14, that is THE adjustment
at the end is the full factory procedure. see ? 4 pages.

by going to zero , you are trying to fool a bad clutch into working better.
by over traveling the cable.

the acid test , is 1 inch.

if the cable moves 1 inch at 14 , and it still grinds, then the clutch is hosed.

not saying what ,but it sure dont matter, cuz it must come out and get tossed to curb.

its all there.
