I just got a 90 Tracker. It was built in July of 90. It has a distributer w/ Vacuum Advance. The Check Engine Light is on. I had the battery disconnected over the weekend and the CEL is still on. How can I retrieve the codes without a scan tool? is there3 anything to jump?
First, look for posts by jtgh and click on the link to his site. There's a world of information there. Second, if your 90 is like my 89 you retrieve the code in two steps. First, put a fuse into the bottom most location on the far right of the fuse block by the driver's left knee. That is the diagnostic port on my car. Then turn on the key and look for the CEL to flash the code. If it flashes once, pauses and then twice, that is the code for 12. Count the flashes and you'll know the code.
If the CEL just stays on all the time, it may be the mileage sensor that is reminding you to do preventive maintenance. There is a hidden switch that must be moved to turn off that light. On my car the switch is behind a small panel directly beneath the steering column. I can't see it, but if I slide my hand into the opening palm down, I can feel it. There's a photo on jtgh's web site.
Thanks for the info.
Where is the DLC? What does it look like?
On my 95 it is in front of the battery, on my 97, it just behind the passenger side headlight. It should have a little rubber cover over it for protection.
