Default Refinishing wheels

Anyone ever tried to sand down their peeling silver paint on wheel rim and refinish it??? when it a wheel too rusty to salvage?

If you did, what kind of:
1) blasting medium? CFI and or PSI?? with what HP air compressor?
2) what kind of primer and paint? sealant?

Thanks for your replies,
gregman

I did this on chrome American Racing 15x8's I had on my Dodge Raider. They were pitted & spotty with rust, but not structurally bad. I just wire brushed the loose stuff & scuffed 'em up good, & used SEM Rust Sheild on 'em. Three coats & no topcoat, it lasted 3 years before it started to come back through, & that was in the rustbelt with no washing to speak of lol. You can prolly get it through a local paint shop, but be sure to have a respirator & good ventilation... the stuff is nasty even from a rattle can. Works great on rust though. If you want to go cheap, good old rustoleum...

The cheapest wouls be to do the wire wheel on a drill or air tool{wear glasses}and paint 'em with silver engine paint{rattle can}I hate sand blasting, that stuff gets EVERYWHERE.

I wired brushed and sanded. Masked the wheel. Bought a rust coverter sprayed it on and waited an hour. Then painted with silver wheel paint. Picked up all products at Kragen.

Yup. Did it on my 90 base model. Got a wire wheel attached to my die grinder and hooked up an air pressure modulator to my air compressor hose to lower the RPM to safe levels, and went at it. Cleaned the grease off the wheels and purchased 3M bumper primer, silver and clear coat. All three paints had flex agent in them which prevented the paint from pealing. The wheels still looked new to the day I sold it.

Great suggestions all.....I'm going to have to mull it over some more....or maybe do a combo mixture...but rust remover/inhibitor is definitely on my list!! I have 3-4 months to gather my stuff before I tackle my 5 wheels...4 regular and my spare.
