Exclamation pinion seal...again!

after only 3 weeks of driving since my pinion seal and bearing were replaced it started leaking again.
i have my doubts about the shop that did it.
i borrowed an impact to redo it myself.
after i remove everything to get to the seal i thought it looked funny...i think he put it in backwards!!!
should the flat side be facing out,or the small rubber angled side be facing out?

which pinion. there are 3.? at least.

AFM Incorporated - Seal Installation Guidelines. Oil Seal.

every bearing maker has a web page on this subject. (seal line)
including bad installations ,and bad journal surfaces.

the seals are simple on this car.
the flat side is out, the spring is inside and this spring and lip , as you look inside
any pressure on the inside presses down on the lip ,forcing lip on to saft making the seal tighter.
there are a vast array of seal types but these here are basic.

see here
Oil Seal Lip Designs
the oil side is on there right.

hope that helps.

same.
this is just a regular standard plano type seal.
there are many ways to mess it up
drop it before install, flatting the side.
backwards.
pounding it in with a punch instead of a seal ,driving kit. tool.
worn groove on flange of front coupling. (3 ways to fix this)
if you buy a new seal the instructons many times says, install with xxxxx outward.
or photo and post it.
or give mfg of seal and pn and ill look it up on their web page.
there are complex seals, but this one is vanilla.

cheers.

Put a bit of grease around the spring to hold it in the seal while it is driven in.

never install any seal dry.
usually the box comes with a paper tell of the 10 ways to mess up a seal.
but a look on any seal makers home page , has everything you need to do that job.
Timken dot com comes to mind.
