4d? ah 4door. or 4wd? 1.6L , or 96 1.8 liter or 2.0L or..... or.... or...
they make 10 engines. (but not in usa) but you didnt say where.
what year,
do you have A/C, or Slushpump automatic (with pesky oil cooler?)
over 200k miles on block and head?

1st one ,traumatic,
100th boring.

personal car? or someones else. below is personal.
1: pull it.
2: get good Felpro gasket , not China crap
3: check deck and head for warpage out of the book. google it. (steel ruler and feeler gauges)
4: if over 10 years, new head bolts. (the 1st one you snap below deck, will make you cry)
5: If over 10 years, all new intake and exh gaskets and injector seals. Dont listen to cheap skates.
6: Torque it in stages. per my torque page.
7: New lash. see my tbelt page.
8: timing cam and dissy, ask if its time for new water pump and t-belt. see both my tbelt and dizzy pages.

im picky and put on all new hoses and belts over 5years, but that's your call.

ok that is IICR.

welcome to snake pit

when i work on cars, is ask my self.
how old is all this junk in here.
i can usually tell by looking at hose and belts and odometer. "yahoo forensics"
i then replace all things that go bad at 5 and 10 year points, with a car over 10.
Proactive thinking saves money down the line. ( work smarter not....)
and hoses/belts popping off at 70mph can lunch a good engine.
