Default Crank Cog - key way inspection

First a word of thanks to all who resonded to my earlier post about
ticking warm / cold engine.

Also a huge word of thanks to Jerry's web site - totally super site and tons
of helpful info. Thanks for your hard work Jerry and great instructions!!

I am planning on T-Belt / Valve lash / water pump in a few weeks (yes I have
stopped driving the little ride for engine safety reason ie engine crash)

While researching Jerry's web site I have learned about the infamous Crank Bolt backing out and thus damaging the key way in the cog. I plan on checking this while changing the T-belt out.

My QUESTION is how have a few of you held the cog in place (keep crank from moving with T-belt off) while trying to back the bolt out and reinstall??

I have seen on Jerry's web site a link to another web site about the Cog key way repair and they maufatured a home made plate that held it in place.
Any other Ideas or tricks - I do not have a holding tool for the cog. but I can make the plate if need be.

fsm shows fly wheel locker , after droping cover.
or make a cog locker to the Alternator bracket.

5sp , use 5th gear , hand brank set by gorilla.

on many shows huge screwdriver locking flywheel.
not sure if that will work.

Hand brake by King Kone sounds great !

Since mine is a 5 speed I wonder how well that will work by using 5th gear?

I will more than likely make the bracket that attachs to the bottom Alt.
bolt. That picture was on the web site was a nice one that showed that home
made bracket.

I was surprised to find out that a new water pump from napa is only $42.
That sure beats the one on both of my diesel trucks - Upper $150 - $200.

Pricing all parts needed and really studing up on the instructions for the
job ahead. I just need to make sure I have a whole weekend and plenty
of COLD BEER. My luck if something goes wrong it does so the beer is good
thing to fall back on too !! HA.

I made a cog tool out of a piece of scrap steel that used three bolts then used both hands to torque bolt 94ft/lbs

Its ugly but as they say function over form

My kicks an auto so was usefull

Did not need it to remove the bolt the first time, was already on its way out

my crank damage was impressive to say the least
