Default 1.6 8v and 16v question

How much difference is there in a 1.6 8 valve and a 1.6 16 valve motor really? I mean which one is the better motor if much difference at all? And whats the pros and cons of the motors and can you interchange them?

Thanks

Short answer from a (mostly) newb to zukes: Though they can bolt in theres LOTS of differences. Wiring/sensors totally different. ECU totally different. Try to get a same year 16v to replace yours, ie if its '96 & has obdII get an obdII 16v engine. The 16v is more powerful & more fuel efficient, it's only drawback is you MUST do timing belt on schedule (60k miles) because it's an interferece engine & if it slips... big engine damage. Valves crash into pistons, bent valves at best & potentially lots worse. Guessing thats what happened to your original? Just my 2 cents.

all above very good +
16v with unique head and pistons (blocks are simular , but not notched pistions) is unique and so is the complete EFI system . 8v TBI and 16v MPI , Night and DAY.
it is designed to breath better, by virtue of the extra 8 valves.
This was invented by Mr. Cosworth in racing years ago. and the cross flow heads !
the 8v is lower powered and can get better gas milage if driving at lower safe speeds.
like below 60mph.

the cranks shafts have the same pn.
the blocks can interchange but swapping pistons but a hone job is needed.

one might be able to swap a 16 block straight in to a 8v car. under the old 8v head.
the notches might lower compression a tad,

the 16v makes extra power, and can push a heavy 4 door , at great speeds.
thus its common usage on this heavy vehicle (600-800 lbs more dead weight)
i imagine a 2door with the 16v is a fast lil car. by comparison.

i only have the 2door 8v and will be getting a 96-98 soon (a dead car and fix it)
my next project will be a 16v. (no 8v on 96+ in N. america)
i have photos of most of the maintenance proc. on my web site.
just click my sig.
other countries have diff. engines and efi , so my comments are just USA centric.

good liuck
and cheers.
